The Deaconess Foundation, formed from the assets released when the United Church of Christ's Deaconess Incarnate Word Health System closed down is interested in creating lasting change in its service area, St. Louise, Missouri. The foundation's mission is to improve the health of that region's community and its residents.
In 2013, the decided to expand the role of foundations in providing community with resources beyond money - for example, by using their social capital to convene stakeholders in community issues, to influence public policy, and to serve as a broker between other agencies, stakeholders, and hangers on. This put them in position to spring into action after the 2014 shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, one of the many small cities that makes up St. Louis.
