Meridian Star – Community conversation focuses on healthy children
The Community Foundation of East Mississippi hosted a meeting Friday to discuss childhood obesity in Mississippi.
The conversation was guided by Therese Hanna, executive director of the Center for Mississippi Health Policy, and Anne Travis, executive director of the Bower Foundation.
Two themes covered in the session were how childhood obesity throughout the state is on the rise, and that exposure and meaningful physical education directly correlate to academic achievement.
“Existing national research demonstrates that children and youth who are exposed to structured physical education programs perform better academically than those who have not had that exposure,” Hanna said.
