Valley Community Foundation awards grants
The opening of a new cancer care center and a high school group's efforts to reduce racism were among the projects receiving funding in the Valley Community Foundation's first round of grants.
The Valley Community Foundation began its philanthropic efforts last week, presenting more than $171,000 in grants to a variety of Naugatuck Valley organizations. The VCF was formed in 2004 under the Community Foundation of Greater New Haven to increase charitable giving and to support charitable projects in Ansonia, Derby, Shelton, Seymour and Oxford.
James E. Cohen, president and CEO of the VCF, said the organization gave grants to 31 Valley groups. It received more than $400,000 in requests from 41 applicants. The grant dollars came from money in the Gates Fund, which was established in the 1950s with the Community Foundation of Greater New Haven, and contributions from individual donors.
