Shift away from private foundations opens a door – Bakersfield.com

Friday, June 19th, 2009
Increasingly, philanthropic people with even modest assets are discovering the value of -- and the value in -- donor advised funds.

Charitable individuals and families can establish donor advised funds through America's 700-plus community foundations, via commercial gift funds, and within some universities and religious foundations. Community foundations can accept securities, including closely held stock, mutual fund shares, IRAs, 401(k) and 403(b) plans, life insurance, land, charitable lead and remainder trusts, and private foundation assets. Gifts to community foundations qualify for higher deductions compared with private foundations: up to 50 percent of adjusted gross income on gifts of cash, compared with 30 percent for private foundations.

* Flexible grant payouts. Giving through a community foundation, a donor has none of the hassles of a private foundation: start up costs, excise tax, tax returns, accounting. Investments are handled with highest degree of professionalism; Kern Community Foundation assets are managed by the California Community Foundation, in service since 1915.

* Grantmaking expertise and due diligence. Gifts made from donor advised funds can be made privately or publicly, as desired.

Now in its 10th year of service, the Kern Community Foundation connects people who care with causes that matter -- to donors and to the community at large.

Nonprofit Conversation: A Little Planning, Vision and Passion Goes a Long Way

Friday, June 19th, 2009
The Communities Foundation of Texas recently embarked on a campaign to launch DonorBridge, a portal that provides both its donors (Donor Advised Fund holders) and the greater community of Dallas a resource with which they could make informed decisions on whom to volunteer with, support, donate to or simply learn more about. CFT has always been a leading community foundation, but in my eyes, this groundbreaking initiative has propelled them into the “visionary” category. They are taking a leading role in fostering philanthropy in their community, at a time when it needs it most.

To encourage donations, Communities Foundation of Texas, with support from The Dallas Foundation, designated a total of $300,000 in matching funds for contributions made through DonorBridge to participating nonprofit organizations on that day.

All in all, Dallas Giving Day raised over $4 million dollars for Dallas based charities. For example, CFT brought in 50 to 100 nonprofits from Dallas and shared with them the vision of the matched gifts (up to $300,000) program on Dallas Giving Day and allowed them to reach out to their donors.

Friday, June 19th, 2009

PITTSBURGH, June 19 /PRNewswire/ -- America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) Foundation recently honored Highmark Inc.'s PALS (People Able to Lend Support) program with its 2009 Community Foundation Leadership Award.

PALS began in September 1997 with the goal of providing nonmedical, in-home services and activities to seniors - members and nonmembers - living within the communities served by Highmark.

During the past 11 years, PALS has increased its services to include 52 book clubs in 14 counties, 12 walking clubs in county parks and senior high-rises and quilt clubs that donate lap robes to seniors living in nursing facilities.

The clubs, along with various other PALS activities, have had a far-reaching, positive impact by allowing seniors to enhance their physical and mental health through weekly exercise programs and fellowship activities within their own communities.

The AHIP Foundation's Community Leadership Awards Program annually recognizes AHIP member organizations for leading practices and programs in the health insurance plan industry.
