Community Foundation of WNC awards grants | CITIZEN-TIMES.com | Asheville Citizen-Times

Children across the region are enjoying their time away from school with help from Summertime Kids Grants from The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, a program that supports summer activities for disadvantaged youth.

Grants totaling $47,574 have been awarded to 28 nonprofit organizations or public agencies in the 18-county mountain region. Summertime Kids-funded programs target children of low-income, children living in remote or rural areas, children with disabilities or children who have suffered from neglect or abuse.

As part of the program, young philanthropists ages 13 to 17, Miles Brown, Avery Lindsay, Janie Love, Emily Love, Caleb Pressley, Emily Samsel and Joanna Leslie, met at The Community Foundation to learn how to make effective grants. The teens read and evaluated grant proposals and helped make the funding decisions.
