Environmental alliance launches bid to increase groups’ impact : Buffalo/Erie County : The Buffalo News

Friday, July 17th, 2009

The Western New York Environmental Alliance is a collective effort that wants to increase the impact of local environmental efforts.

The health and enhancement of our regions natural assets is crucial to the revitalization of this area and to the well-being of its residents, said Clotilde Perez-Bode Dedecker, president and chief executive of the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, which helped convene the 150 groups.

The priorities are to preserve and restore the regions natural resources through collaborative work; educate and engage the public, as well as elected officials, on regional environmental issues; and strengthen the ability of environmental organizations.

Citing Blueprint Buffalo, environmental officials also said with 30,000 vacant houses, the city has the third-highest home vacancy rate in the country, and Buffalos recycling rate is at 6.5 percent, lower than the 27 percent national average.

Too often we see groups working at their goals in their own way in isolation, said Katherine Kit Kennedy, deputy state attorney general for environmental protection.

"I like to help people, and I think it's important to give something back to the community."

What is the Foundation of the Jewish Federation of Atlantic & Cape May Counties?

Friday, July 17th, 2009
The Foundation is a permanent source of funds that our Jewish community relies on year after year. A Foundation gift helps build our endowment, which generates interest that we invest in our children, older adults, families, the needy and our community. By making a gift to the Foundation, you ensure the continued vitality of our Jewish community for today and for all generations to come.

The first responsibility of a planned gift is to satisfy the needs of the creator, you. Planned giving, as an integral part of an effective estate plan, can help you increase our annual income; avoid Federal and State taxes including capital gains, gift, income and estate taxes; receive an immediate charitable deduction; take care of your children and other heirs, and make large gifts to your favorite charities.

Give arts groups money and you help them pay the bills today. The grant also underscores the increasingly important role local foundations are playing in helping to sustain local arts groups, from large institutions like the Detroit Symphony Orchestra to midsize and grassroots groups.

We want to help groups with money, but we also want to help them understand that so much of the future is online, said foundation president Mariam Noland. var fb_posttitle_1490558 = "Michigan art groups get million-dollar grant to secure future"; var fb_sitename_1490558 = "Yellow Door Media"; var fb_link_url_1490558 = "http://yellowdoormedia.posterous.com/michigan-art-groups-get-million-dollar-grant"; var fb_img_data_1490558 = []; var fb_mp3_data_1490558 = {}; var fb_vid_data_1490558 = {}; var fb_snippet_1490558 = "By Mark Stryker Free Press Staff Writer July 16, 2009 Give arts groups money and you help them pay the bills today.
