Cleveland Foundation awards $18 million

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011
CoolRobert Eckardt, executive vice president of the Cleveland FoundationCLEVELAND - The Cleveland Foundation awarded $18 million in grants to groups working in economic development, public education and the arts.

The Cleveland Metropolitan School District received an $800,000 award to support 13 innovative schools, including the newly opened Campus International School at Cleveland State University.

The Cleveland Foundation is the nation's second largest community foundation with assets of $1.9 billion.

Other grants awarded during this quarter include:

$750,000, NorTech for innovation in manufacturing sectors.

$700,000, Breakthrough Charter Schools, an independent operator of charter schools, which plans to open two new schools in the fall.

$785,000, College Now Greater Cleveland (formerly Cleveland Scholarship Programs) for five programs, including college-readiness courses in Cleveland public high schools.

I think it is great the Cleveland foundation supports economic development groups however, giving them money is not enough.

MCF awards $6 million in education grants

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011
The Marin Community Foundation has announced awarding $6 million in education grants to help low-income students and students of color achieve academic success.

The grants are made under the foundations five-year strategic initiative to close the educational achievement gap in Marin County, foundation spokesman Fred Silverman said.

The grant funding focused on the San Rafael, Novato Unified, Sausalito Marin City and Shoreline Unified school districts, which are attended by large numbers of low-income students and people of color, Silverman said.

Approximately $3 million will support scholarships and 16 programs that increase the number of students who attend college by helping them participate in after-school academic and social programs.

The college readiness efforts will help students improve their study skills, prepare for tests, receive counseling, develop social leadership skills and learn about college admissions and selection processes.

The largest grant recipient is the 10,000 Degrees program, which received $1.8 million for financial aid scholarships.

Marin Community Foundation President and CEO Thomas Peters said students often fall through the cracks if they do not get the extra help with their studies that can make a difference between dropping out and thriving.

This is a missed opportunity for these students, their families and the community as a whole, so were determined to help fill that void, Peters said.

More than $2 million will go toward early education programs in preschool through third grade in the Shoreline Unified, Novato Unified, San Rafael City Schools and Sausalito Marin City school districts.

Peters said successful early education efforts focus on involving families in their childrens education, enhancing teacher training, ensuring smooth transitions between grades and using data to identify the specific needs of each student.

Its increasingly clear that helping kids succeed in their earliest years of school can have an impact in later grades and even beyond, Peters said. And it starts in preschool, where children acquire the skills to thrive in kindergarten.

The Novato Unified, San Rafael City Schools and Sausalito Marin City school districts also will share a $1 million school transformation grant to help students who are falling behind academically improve their achievement.

Those efforts include strengthening school leadership, encouraging greater collaboration among teachers, involving parents, undertaking more rigorous assessment of student performance and establishing school cultures that set high expectations for students.

Were excited about the early results of these kinds of activities and greatly appreciate the sustained efforts of all involved, Peters said.
