JOLIET The Joliet Township High School Foundation is seeking student and teacher applications for its Fall Student and Staff Grant Program.

All JTHS students and certified teachers are eligible to apply for grants that support projects or purchase supplies that are not within budgetary limits.

Last year, grant funding provided student tuition to summer camps and teachers with supplemental learning supplies.

In the last 20 years, the foundation has distributed more than $190,000 in grants to faculty, students, clubs and special programs. This year the foundation will divide approximately $18,000 between the two campuses.

Grant applications are available in the principal's office at both Central and West Campus or online at www.jths.org.

Foundation names advisory group

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011
The Rochester Area Community Foundation is expanding its service region to Yates and Seneca counties, and is simultaneously launching the Yates Community Endowment, which will provide community capital to meet changing needs, enrich cultural life and spur sustainable growth under the guidance of a newly named local advisory board.

By reaching out to Yates and Seneca counties, we hope to help residents, towns and nonprofit organizations meet local needs by expanding community philanthropy, says Jennifer Leonard, president and executive director of the Community Foundation.

The Yates Community Endowment will raise funds specifically for Yates County under the guidance of a local advisory board co-chaired by Katie Nord Peterson of Penn Yan and Tom Argust of Rochester and Town of Italy. Argust is a former Community Foundation board president who retired in 2003 as Rochesters Commissioner of Community Development.

26, the Yates Community Endowment introduced their advisory board and announced the first matching gifts at an event at Esperanza Mansion.

Nationwide, community foundations are a popular way to support such local giving, both during lifetime and through planned gifts, because donors can support their favorite communities, causes and charities through a named fund that lasts forever.

Yates County residents will be able to create or add to funds that support the countys general needs, and to help specific causes or organizations.

The TI Foundation gives to the arts because the community has so much to gain, said Ann Pomykal, executive director of the TI Foundation. This is where local foundations and corporations can step up and ensure that our communitys arts and culture continue to thrive.

According to an economic impact study produced by the North Texas Business Council for the Arts and Deloitte last year, North Texas non-profit arts and cultural organizations contributed more than $3 billion to the regions economy over the past three years.

Dallas Childrens Theater is one of the organizations that received one of these TI Foundation grants.

This year, TI Foundation stepped forward to contribute much-needed funding to arts and cultural programming in North Texas, says Robyn Flatt, Executive Artistic Director at Dallas Childrens Theater. Given the difficult economic climate faced by many arts organizations, this increase in funding shows TI Foundations steadfast commitment to the arts in our community. The Dallas Symphony is deeply grateful for this invaluable support.

Pomykal added, The TI Foundation board has to make the difficult grant choices, but theres no more important time to support the arts. While we cannot respond to all funding requests, we believe that weve invested in arts partners who are cornerstones of our community. Lynch, president and CEO of Americans for the Arts, said Investing in the arts not only improves community quality of life but also helps attract and retain a skilled workforce and build new markets.

The Unified Prevention (UP!) Coalition for a Drug Free Do-a Ana County, an initiative of the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico, is gearing up to educate residents about the dangers of tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs with help from those who know the community well.

Attendees at the event will have the opportunity to meet local law enforcement, city, county and state leaders involved in protecting the youth in Do-a Ana County while learning the difference between a policy, a law and an ordinance; what currently exists in the state, county and local communities and how members of the community can work together to make a difference for the youth.

The goal is to better equip the community at large with information to build community collaboration and work collectively to reduce and prevent underage drinking, tobacco and illicit drug use.

"We need to look at where we are, what is working and what needs to be tweaked," Connor said.
