The grants will be allocated through the Foundation's Translational Research Acceleration Program.
One of the projects under the program involves the use of gene therapy to resurrect and reactivate cone cells of the eye that are compromised by disease.
The Foundation is offering grants to the Oklahoma University Health Sciences Center, which is developing a nanoparticle gene therapy delivery system, in partnership with Copernicus Therapeutics.
A part of the grant will also support the research going on at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and the University of Florida for projects investigating gene therapy for two different LCA-causing genes.
In addition, investment will help the University of Pennsylvania for choroideremia gene therapy.
Foundation Fighting Blindness chief research officer Stephen Rose said the gene therapy has immense potential in saving and restoring vision.

Waverly Yowell Elementary School fifth grade teacher Victoria Gelbert receives a certificate from Madison County Education Foundation President Kathie O'Connor and balloons from MCEF Board of Directors member Robert Legge. Madison County school halls filled with smiles and applause this month when Madison County Education Foundation reps awarded mini-grants. What a great way to bring sunshine to an otherwise gray gloomy day, Waverly Yowell Elementary School Principal Karen Allen said after teachers at her school found out they were among the award recipients. To add to the festivity, MCEF President Kathie OConnor and MCEF Board of Directors member Robert Legge carried balloons to the classrooms when they presented the teachers with a framed award certificate and a note of congratulations. When OConnor announced to the students that their teachers were being given an award, the classes broke into spontaneous applause. We have so many outstanding teachers in our Madison schools and should take every opportunity we can to recognize them. Applications were put in every teachers mailbox at the start of the school year and can be found on the MCEF Web site at www.madisonedfoundation.org. Listen for an upcoming announcement of its first big fund-raiser in the spring, March Madness Comes to Madison, the proceeds of which will fund teacher mini-grants and student scholarships. Lisa Crawford, Wetsel Middle School, Literature Comes Alive Storytelling Presentation, $500 -- Crawford will invite Jim Weiss, professional master storyteller and award-winning recording artist, to perform for the entire middle school student body. This year we plan to have our students present an evening of folk tales and oral histories for the enjoyment of the Madison County community. This pre-production experience by Weiss will help to provide our students with the stimulus, training and confidence to create an experience the students and their families will treasure. Cora Chlebnikow, Waverly Yowell Elementary School, Mountain Climber Academy after school reading program, $275 -- Mountain Climber Academy is an after school program that targets students who are currently performing below grade-level expectations in reading, writing, and math. Students, $175 -- Whitaker writes that the table tennis club will provide students with disabilities with the opportunity to learn the rules of table tennis, game play and competition with their peers. MCEF has also identified two table tennis tables and equipment currently located in the old Criglersville Elementary School building. MCEF approached Pete Elliott, the Madison County Board of Supervisors member who is in charge of the schools contents. He has approved the tables and equipment to be moved from the shuttered Criglersville school to the still-open Madison schools if one of the still-open schools wish to have them. Bettie Berry, Carrie Sacra, Lisa Taylor, Madison County High School, Tree identification and Labeling for Special Education Students, $100 -- This is a joint project proposed by Bettie Berry, Carrie Sacra and Lisa Taylor. The teachers write that the students will take photos of a variety of trees, plot their location on a drawn map, research to find the common and scientific names, decide how many and which trees should be labeled, and attach labels to the designated trees. $('.social-bubble a.share_digg').attr('href', 'http://digg.com/submit?url=' + shorturl + '&title=' + contTitle); $('.social-bubble a.share_delicious').attr('href', 'http://www.delicious.com/save?jump=yes&url=' + shorturl + '&title=' + contTitle); $('.social-bubble a.share_reddit').attr('href', 'http://www.reddit.com/submit?url=' + shorturl + '&title=' + contTitle); $('.social-bubble a.share_tumblr').attr('href', 'http://www.tumblr.com/share?s=&t=' + contTitle + '&u=' + shorturl + '&v=3'); $('.social-bubble a.share_google').attr('href', 'https://www.google.com/bookmarks/mark?op=add&bkmk='+shorturl+'&title='+contTitle);

A northwest Louisiana economic funding collaborative was recently awarded a hefty grant aimed at streamlining work force partnerships and developing the area's labor pool.
Workforce Innovations in Northwest Louisiana, a funding collaborative led by the Community Foundation of North Louisiana, is one of five sites nationwide to receive a grant from the National Fund for Workforce Solutions.
The $300,000 grant, which will be awarded over two years, will be combined with matched funds from the community and other designated revenue streams at a value near $900,000 for the first year.
"WINLA represents a unified effort among local leaders in employer, education, labor and philanthropic sectors to create lasting job opportunities for our citizens and foster a skilled labor force for our employees," Community Foundation Executive Director Paula Hickman said.
The collaborative including a range of diverse partners such as Bossier Parish Community College, the Caddo Parish Commission, the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce, Capital One Bank and Goodwill Industries of North Louisiana Inc. Another partnership for the energy sector is being developed.
By partnering with Willis-Knighton Health Systems, Louisiana Technical College and Southern University among others, CERT Executive Director Patti Trudell said work force training can be geared to where the need is greatest.
The collaborative will look at issues like transportation and child care support for employees, job-specific training or hiring services, Trudell said. ..Build 0: 0 ms (Misc) ....Build 9: 0 ms (Content) ...Build 0: 0 ms (Misc) ...Build 0: 0 ms (Misc) ...Build 0: 0 ms (Misc) ...Build 0: 0 ms (Misc) ...Build 0: 0 ms (Misc) ......Build 0: 0 ms (Misc) ....Build 9: 0 ms (Content) ..Build 9: 47 ms (Content) ..Build 9: 0 ms (Content) ....Build 9: 0 ms (Content) ...Build 9: 0 ms (Content) ...Build 9: 0 ms (Content) ..Build 9: 0 ms (Content) ..Build 9: 0 ms (Content) ....Build 0: 141 ms (Misc) ...Build 9: 0 ms (Content) ...Build 9: 16 ms (Content) ...Build 0: 0 ms (Misc) ..Build 9: 0 ms (Content) ....Build 9: 0 ms (Content)

From left, Veronica Blake, Placer Community Foundation CEO; Mona Dmitrenko, California Foundation for Stronger Communities; Carol Arnold, Foothill Farmers Market general manager; and Dave Snyder, director of the Placer County Office of Economic Development, display the $25,000 grant from the California Foundation for Stronger Communities. Carol Arnold, general manager of the Foothill Farmers Market Association and in charge of administering the pilot program, has received three grants $25,000 from the California Foundation for Stronger Communities, $3,200 from Slow Food Placer County and $9,000 from Placer County First Five Commission to get it started. It is a huge barrier for low-income families to shop at farmers markets because of the cost, Arnold said. Last year Roger Ingram (University of California Cooperative Extension farm adviser) suggested that when doing nutrition classes for low-income (families), to then give them money to buy food at the farmers market, Arnold said. The $25,000 grant will be used to pilot the food stamp (SNAP) EBT (electronic benefit transfer) program at the farmers market. For example, qualified families who spend a dollar in food stamp money at the market, will get a voucher for $1 to be spent at the market, she said. Arnold, who is very enthusiastic about the program, said she plans to put the $3,200 grant funding to work right away, purchasing bags of mandarins to be given out to qualifying families in December at the Old Town Auburn farmers market.
