Basehor Elementary School first-grader Piper Rusk tries out a Nook Color tablet device during class Tuesday, as other students look on.
Cynthia Fletcher's first-grade class at Basehor Elementary reacts with enthusiasm after Fletcher shows them a Nook Color tablet device. Fletcher borrowed the tablet from kindergarten teacher Amy Scruggs to show the students what they had to look forward to after the Basehor-Linwood Education Foundation awarded a $600 grant for two of the tablets. The books give the students the option of reading on their own or listening as the device reads to them, which Fletcher said should allow the students to make their way through trickier, higher-level books than they could read on paper.

Long Beach Community Foundation (LBCF) and Long Beach Community Action Partnership (LBCAP) are moving forward with the revival of public access for Long Beach. This initiative helps community and place-based foundations support news and information projects that inform and engage residents.
The public funding comes from the City of Long Beachs cable franchise fees, known as PEG (Public, Education, Government) funds, which are restricted solely for capital expenses like equipment and facilities. News and information from Long Beach now has the potential to reach far beyond the local community through the Internet, and we intend to increasingly broaden its reach.
Long Beach Community Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity dedicated to effecting positive change in Long Beach by encouraging charitable giving, managing endowment funds, assisting professional planned giving advisors, and making strategic grants to Long Beach nonprofit organizations. Jeffcoat Memorial Foundation donates $10,000 for the Vision Therapy program
Optometric vision therapy is physical therapy for the eyes and brain that is individualized and provided under the supervision of an optometrist.
Thanks to the Vision Therapy Program, I can see great, said Lois Fitzwater. All as a result of a successful Vision Therapy experience.
The Program is making a difference, said Hank Royer, director, Jeffcoat Memorial Foundation. Of all the worthy programs and organizations that the Jeffcoat Memorial Foundation contributes to, the Vision Therapy Program is probably the most gratifying as it permanently changes lives.
The Community Foundation of Dickinson County provides the back office support for the Vision Therapy Program of USD 435. The Jeffcoat Memorial Foundation, a local private foundation, provides the funding for grants, the Community Foundation provides the staff to administer the grant program and the school district provides staff to identify students who could benefit from the therapy, communicate with parents and monitor program outcomes, said Kristine Meyer, president of the Community Foundation.
