"Mary Ann is the Community Foundation to a lot of people," said Gary Bertch, outgoing chairman of the foundation's board.

Moore Foundation awards $6 million for earthquake early warning research

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011
Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation awards $6 million for earthquake early warning research A warning system has the potential to save thousands of lives and millions of dollars in the event of an earthquake, and we feel it is important to resolve any scientific questions that could stand in the way of implementing such a system.

Each university will receive $2 million over three years.

The technology and scientific expertise exist to create a sophisticated West Coast earthquake early warning system even more advanced than Japans now four-year-old system, which functioned well after the magnitude 9.0 Tohoku quake earlier this year, said Richard Allen, director of the campuss Berkeley Seismological Laboratory and a UC Berkeley professor of earth and planetary science. We are gratified that the foundation is supporting research that will help us bridge the gap between the current nascent test earthquake early warning system in California and a full West Coast ShakeAlert prototype.

A YouTube video shows what one Japan resident experienced from the countrys early earthquake warning system during the March 2010 disaster.

ShakeAlert, the current version of an earthquake early warning (EEW) system now being tested by Caltech and UC Berkeley in collaboration with the Southern California Earthquake Center, ETH Zurich and the USGS, opens a pop-up alert on a recipients computer in the event of a major earthquake. Current EEW systems, for example, act as if quakes rupture at only one point, when, in fact, in larger earthquakes, fault ruptures can extend over hundreds of kilometers.

The Foundations grant is a huge contribution to moving forward the science of earthquake early warning systems, said Thomas Heaton, director of Caltechs Earthquake Engineering Research Laboratory and professor of geophysics and of civil engineering.

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, established in 2000, seeks to advance environmental conservation and scientific research around the world and to improve the quality of life in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network Receives $1.4 Million in Funding from the Daniel and Janet Mordecai Foundation - MarketWatch The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network Receives $1.4 Million in Funding from the Daniel and Janet Mordecai Foundation

29, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- A $1.4 million gift from The Daniel and Janet Mordecai Foundation will provide crucial funding for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network's 2012 Research Grants Program, enabling the organization to support the investigations of a new class of early career scientists. Daniel Mordecai died in 2002 from pancreatic cancer, the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States.

"This generous investment by The Daniel and Janet Mordecai Foundation will fund five research grants in 2012, including one Pathway to Leadership award and four Career Development awards," said Julie Fleshman, President and CEO of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. "With the foundation's support, we will continue to build a comprehensive pancreatic cancer research community and fund research that will ultimately lead to early detection methods, better treatment options, and hopefully improved survival rates for patients with pancreatic cancer." The grants program, administered using the American Association for Cancer Research's rigorous peer-review system, is designed to attract investigators with innovative ideas and brilliant early-career scientists to study pancreatic cancer, grow the number of researchers working in the field, nurture collaborations across disciplines and institutions, and expedite scientific progress for patient benefit. "I am proud to honor the memory of my husband, Daniel, by partnering with the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network to advance research into this devastating disease," said Janet Mordecai, President of the Daniel and Janet Mordecai Foundation. Pancreatic cancer has the lowest relative survival rate of all the cancers tracked by both the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute, with a five-year relative survival rate in the single digits at just six percent.

About The Daniel and Janet Mordecai FoundationThe Daniel and Janet Mordecai Foundation was founded by Janet Mordecai after Dan's untimely death from pancreatic cancer. At this time the Foundation supports programs in the areas of Health (with an emphasis on pancreatic cancer, medullary thyroid cancer and "end of life care"), Culture and the Performing Arts, Community Outreach, and Education. About the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is the national organization creating hope in a comprehensive way through research, patient support, community outreach and advocacy for a cure.
