Community foundation changes leadership

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012
The Greater Kansas City Community Foundation said Wednesday that Deborah Wilkerson will succeed Laura McKnight as chief executive of the philanthropic organization.

Wilkerson, currently the foundation’s general counsel and chief operating officer, will become CEO on March 31.

“We have a terrific succession plan,” said McKnight, who said she intends to explore the field of social responsibility and philanthropy “and how that plays out at home and in the workplace.”

She said she may start a business to encourage companies to broaden their social responsibility and workplace-centered philanthropy.

McKnight, 43, has worked at the foundation — one of the nation’s 10 largest community foundations — for 11 years and has headed it for the last six.

Should the Komen Foundation Stop Funding Planned Parenthood?

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012
Should the Komen Foundation Stop Funding Planned Parenthood? Komen Foundation for the Cure, an organization devoted to breast cancer prevention, treatment, and research, announced Tuesday it would halt funding to Planned Parenthood. "The main factor in the decision was a new rule adopted by Komen that prohibits grants to organizations being investigated by local, state or federal authorities," said a Komen spokesperson.

The move quickly drew criticism by women's health activists and breast cancer survivors alike, arguing that Planned Parenthood's cancer prevention and detection services are especially vital for lower-income women who have no other options. Said Laura Chapin, "If social media is any gauge, Komen's foolish decision may have irreparably damaged its brand--and more importantly, irreparably damaged the health of hundreds of thousands of women."

Not long after the story broke, the Komen foundation defended its actions in a statement, "While it is regrettable when changes in priorities and policies affect any of our grantees, such as a longstanding partner like Planned Parenthood, we must continue to evolve to best meet the needs of the women we serve and most fully advance our mission."

What do you think? Komen Foundation have stopped its funding for Planned Parenthood?
