Funding secured for Head Start

Department of Health and Human Resources Administration for Children and Families and will be given to Head Start programs in order to continue to serve local families.

The individual grants were for Northern Panhandle Head Start Inc., for $5,410,140 and $4,579,038 for the Regional Education Service Agency 8.

Head Start is a federal program that was created to promote school readiness of children from birth to age five from low-income families by enhancing their cognitive, social and emotional development.

For this benefit program, recipients must be a resident of the state of West Virginia in order to qualify.

Children in foster care, homeless children, and children from families receiving public assistance (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families or Supplemental Security Income) are also eligible for Head Start and Early Head Start services regardless of income.

Heidi Bach Arvin, Head Start director for the Regional Education Service Agency 8, said that the grant has helped her agency greatly.

“Our kids deserve the best chances at success, and it is important to invest in programs like Head Start that will lead the next generation to a brighter tomorrow. It is vital that we have programs like Head Start to pave the way for our children and families and help guarantee them the best academic experience possible,” Manchin said.

“This funding will continue to help these programs provide access to the education, health and social services that our families and children need to thrive today and in the future.”

“That’s why I am glad to see this substantial funding headed to programs in West Virginia so they can continue providing our next generation of students with health and educational services that will enhance their lives.”
