Johnstown secures state grant for bridge

JOHNSTOWN A state grant for replacement of the Miller Street bridge was fully approved, and the project may commence next spring, a city official said.

City Engineer Christopher Vose reported to the Common Council Monday night at City Hall that the city is concluding the approval process for the grant. He said the city may have materials for the project by spring.

The agreement between the city and the state involves a promised $100,000 grant from the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York. The Miller Street project is slated to be completed in house by the city Department of Public Works using a prefabricated bridge. The span was taken down after it was cited by the state Department of Transportation as a deteriorating structure.

The city previously bid for design work for the project, receiving a low bid in June 2016 of $55,565 submitted by Contech Engineered Solutions of West Chester, Ohio.

Elsewhere, in his report to the council, Vose said DPW activities have been “slow” lately, although the department has been involved in building projects at City Hall. He said DPW is renovating the City Clerk’s Office.

Vose said garbage pickup will be on a normal pickup the next two weeks during the holidays.

The city’s brush dropoff on West Main Street was recently closed, he said.

“We’re not taking anymore yard clippings until spring,” Vose said.

Sand barrels for residential use are situated near the Johnstown Senior Citizens Center, the city engineer said.

Vose also reported the city took possession of another fuel truck for use by DPW.
