Friday, January 15th, 2010

Donations for the relief effort in Haiti have been pouring in from throughout Silicon Valley as children, adults and companies have responded to the devastating earthquake that struck near the capital of Port-Au-Prince.

The Silicon Valley Community Foundation's Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund is matching up to $100,000 in donations from donors, corporations and the community. The organization met its first $50,000 match in 24 hours, with the matching funds provided by the Irene S. Scully Fund. The second $50,000 matching program, announced Friday, was provided by the Lieve Roelandt Foundation. Donations will be sent to organizations working to provide critical assistance in Haiti, according to the Silicon Valley foundation.

"We're seeing the generosity of our community from all quarters," said Emmett Carson, CEO and president of the community foundation, adding that donations have been received from corporations, individual donors, kids and adults.

Visioning a step closer to reality – Galesburg, IL

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009
The city has hired a consultant to train local community groups, non-profits and the City Council to help improve leadership and implement some of the ideas generated at the Galesburg Advantage Visioning forums.

Six visioning forums earlier this year were attended by hundreds of local people who came together to discuss ideas to improve Galesburg. The city is now working to take those discussions to the next level by building a structure to develop ideas aired at the meetings.

The visioning process, which began at the Galesburg Advantage forums, has been refined to focus on three areas: Bringing ideas to fruition through partnering local agencies with themes; targeting participation with traditionally under-represented populations; and building capacity in local agencies to support the vision concepts and cultivate leadership.

Later in the fall, Galesburg Advantage will match those themes with local organizations which can begin to tackle them. The two workshops in September will be sponsored by the city in partnership with Galesburg Community Foundation, Carl Sandburg College and University of Illinois Extension.

The visioning sessions finished in April and the city has been working with a number of local groups to see how ideas generated at the forum can be developed.

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009
The Los Altos Community Foundation plans to launch a new community program, Family Giving Project, a four-part series that will provide children in grades 1 through 7 and their parents the tools for lifelong community philanthropic engagement.

LACF will match the fee and return $100 to each family at the end of the course to be used as the families first post-course giving project.

This way, the children and their parents can put into action what they've learned and have a chance to share where and why they decided to give their $100, said Nancy Lippe, LACF program officer.

Group wants Central Virginians to give back | Charlottesville Daily Progress

Monday, July 27th, 2009
The Charlottesville Area Community Foundation, which helps fund dozens of nonprofit agencies and programs throughout the area, has created a different organization designed to appeal to young Central Virginia donors.

The fund targets Central Virginians in their 20s, 30s and 40s and gives them a different way to invest in their community at the same time they network with peers.

The whole concept is that [members] get to meet each other, network, learn about different organizations in the community and leverage their contributions by pooling together and giving back, explained Holly Hatcher, of the community foundation.

The community foundation already gave the future fund its first run at a kickoff membership event and fundraiser on June 16 at The Local.

Administered by the community foundation, the fund would return 99 percent of contributions back to the community with only 1 percent used to cover administrative costs.

Organizers expect at least 1,600 people to turn out for the event, which starts at 7 p.m. Friday at Boogie Fever nightclub on Woodward just north of Nine Mile Road.

"We believe the event is going to grow again this year and we should be able to raise about $22,000 for city charitable and service groups," said Mayor Craig Covey, co-founder of the event.

The pub crawl, now in its 13th year, will benefit the Ferndale Police Auxiliary, FernCare, Ferndale Community Foundation and the Michigan AIDS Coalition.
