The McKnight Foundation is a private philanthropic organization founded in Minnesota in 1953 by William L. McKnight and his wife, Maude L. McKnight. Although Mr. McKnight was president and chief executive of the 3M Company, the Foundation has no affiliation with 3M. The Foundation initiated its formal program in 1974 and fulfills a dual role as a responsive grantmaker that supports grassroots action, and a strategic grantmaker that encourages system and policy reform.
