Carole Levine, principal consultant at Levine Partners, addresses how nonprofits struggle when things go down and how they are getting smaller, paper paychecks by the day, having an expensive COBRA plan, and not getting deserved explanations.
Levine cites investigative reporting of Lauren Victory in Chicago with Community Counseling Centers of Chicago, or C4 and its staff, noting the three "red flags" that include sudden changes in salaries, sudden change in how pay is processed, and sudden loss of health insurance and immediate switch to COBRA -- all of which caused CBS to investigate.
Levine writes that there are no clear explanations for why such actions took place within the nonprofit. Levine points out that the people usually caught in the middle are the staff and those they serve.
Levine advises that explanations are necessary to reassure staff and inspire renewed confidence among them.
Levine also offers hints for nonprofit staff in case they find themselves trapped in similar situations.
