The living wage for a single adult working full-time in the Atlanta area is $18.37 per hour, and if you have a child, that goes up to $33.14 per houror almost $69,000 per year.
That's according to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Living Wage Calculator, which defines "basic living expenses" as food, gas, clothes, and medical costs.
"We feel it when we visit the grocery store, fill up our gas tank, or receive our lease renewal paperwork," writes the co-founder of the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta in an op-ed for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
"Low-wage-earning families who were able to set aside some of their direct cash transfer funds during the pandemic have already seen their emergency savings dwindle, leaving them more vulnerable to the types of economic shocks we all experience: a flat tire, a sick child, a broken appliance."
