For nine months, 1780 students from 126 academic institutions around India worked on "net-zero" building designs as part of the annual Solar Decathlon India competition.
The grand prize went to a team from the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology in Nagpur, India, for its plan to build a two-story, 180,000-square-foot office building that uses 50% less energy than a typical office building, reports the Times of India.
The competition, which focused on climate change and sustainable building design, was held at the Infosys campus in Mysuru, one of the world's most sustainability-focused campuses, per a press release.
"Some of these student teams have developed net-zero building designs that are on par with the work of the best professionals design teams in India," the competition's director says.
"If students can do this so well, it is time that building owners and developers start demanding this quality of work on every building project they invest in."
