Harrison honored the girls locally after Lerblance received the Prudential Spirit of Community Award as one of Oklahomaas top two youth volunteers of 2015 and Wynn won honors from Prudential as one of four statewide finalists.

McAlester Mayor Steve Harrison recognized both by proclaiming April 28 as theA Alexandria aLexiea Lerblance and Alana Wynn Prudential Spirit of Community Recognition Day.

Lerblance is a winner of the Prudential Spirit of Community Award, recognizing her as one of Oklahomaas top two youth volunteers for 2015.

Wynn is one of four statewide finalists for the Prudential Spirit of Community Award a prompting Harrison to note that McAlester had two of the six statewide Community Award winners honoring youth volunteers.

A surprising number of volunteers in communities across the nation are like Lerblance and Wynn, students who contribute their time without expectation of reward, other than the gratification that comes from helping others, Harrison said.

Wynn has raised almost $40,000 to benefit the American Red Cross by creating and implementing the Red Cross Memorial Golf Tournament , a fundraiser to honor the important volunteer work of the Red Cross, Harrison noted. The annual benefit is held at the McAlester Country Club.

Editorial: Crisis in Nepal

Thursday was Phil’s Day at the University of Iowa, a day in which the virtues of philanthropy are spread around campus through advocates and distinctive yellow tape.

And across the world, there is a desperate need for philanthropy: in Nepal.

INFORM, a risk-assessment group sponsored by the European Commission, has developed a chart detailing the risk of earthquakes in countries prone to them, taking the country’s infrastructure, emergency-response systems, and other factors into account.

Entire villages have been cut off from aid and resources by landslides triggered in the earthquake, according to the New York Times.

Big Payback brings rewards from giving

Big Payback brings rewards from givingBig Payback brings rewards from giving

End Slavery Tennessee, last yearas top-earning small nonprofit organization in the Big Payback, aims to receive $40,000 to go toward a new safe house.(Photo: Submitted)

With the “bigger better” second annual The Big Payback just days away, my email inbox is full of requests for money, my home mailbox is jammed with charitable solicitations, and I am close to being overwhelmed by Payback pleadings.

So many good causes and never enough money to go around.

So what is the best way for us to decide which organizations and agencies to support with our hard-earned dollars?

I decided to ask some local foundations and a few generous individuals for suggestions on how to decide, and this was my takeaway:

a Follow your passions and support nonprofits that are doing successful work in areas in which you are interested, such as hunger, homelessness, animal programs, sexual abuse, domestic violence, etc. Plus, you can vote for their favorite nonprofit to help them win a $1,500 “Pop-Up” prize.

a And if you want information on the nonprofits you are considering, consult givingmatters.com, where you can find details on their missions, their boards and other due diligence facts.

a Pete Bird, president of the Frist Foundation, which is the largest private foundation in Middle Tennessee (It awarded $10 million in grants last year, the largest of which went to the Nashville Zoo and the Frist Center for the Visual Arts), said The Big Payback offers a “Big Opportunity” for engagement, as well as generosity.

“The Big Payback is all about encouraging the fun in giving a kind of like a big block party involving your favorite agencies. Thomas Health Foundation, and who for many years was the director of the Ingram Foundation, agreed that The Big Payback goes beyond fundraising and helps people in the community become connected with local nonprofits.

“In the big picture, any effort that gets more people excited about investing in the community is good,” she said, in reference to The Big Payback initiative, which last year raised nearly $1.5 million to support 525 nonprofits that provide services throughout Middle Tennessee.

This year, 755 nonprofits are participating, and there is close to a quarter-million dollars in bonuses and incentives to sweeten the pot during the 24-hour local Payback event.

Dolan said that for individuals who are trying to decide where to put their money, “I think it’s important to find the organizations that are working on a problem that you are passionate about. A leaderboard helps nonprofits and their supporters track their progress in real time!

In 2014 the event raised nearly $1.5 million to support 525 nonprofits providing services throughout Middle Tennessee.

As the name implies, the idea behind The Big Payback is two-fold: 1) to encourage people who can help to invest in the organizations that do help, and 2) to help our community understand that there will be a palpable, measurable, local return on investment from their support of this effort.

FOUNDATION SPOTLIGHT: Riverside City Mission

Partnering with local churches, Riverside City Mission holds community outreach meals, distributes food boxes and clothing as well as offering personal counseling in Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

In 1997, Riverside City Mission began its work under the umbrella of the Los Angeles Mission and by 2002 became a separate nonprofit organization. Partnering with local churches, today the group holds community outreach meals, distributes food boxes and clothing as well as offering personal counseling in Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

“We are able to reach more people this way than we ever could have if we had stayed stationary,” said Jackie Davis, the group’s director.

Clients who are in need of food services are required to fill out a form to qualify and register. Food boxes include 20 to 40 meals depending on what food the Mission has available.

“Food boxes help people who are struggling to still afford buy their medication or keep their electricity on,” said Davis.

None of these services would be possible without volunteers who help pack boxes as well as sort clothing and household items, according to Davis. Davis said the demand for these notes is huge and there are now nearly 50 people on the recipient list.

The group has received grants from the Arbor Fund at The Community Foundation, but still depends on individual donations to cover their needs. It takes a ton of time to love someone.”

SUMMIT SPECIFIC

In 2014, the success of the Ski Conservation Fund spurred the NFF to launch a new guest contribution program called the Summit Fund.

That fund expands the concept of the Ski Conservation Fund to all businesses in Summit County, and the money is used only for projects in Summit instead of the entire White River National Forest.
