You can vote SA social entrepreneur onto global success – Times LIVE

As the South African winner of Chivas Regalas global The Venture II competition for his potentially life-saving app CrashDetech, Mr Gerrits will join 26 other young entrepreneurs from around the globe in New York for the chance to win a portion of a US$1 million pool that will take their humanitarian aspirations as far as possible.

Having been in the tech industry for about 14 years, he acknowledges that there are insurance giants in South Africa who offer impact-assistance devices as part of their packages. However, 70% of the population have no insurance on their vehicles and, so, no life-saving backup.

aIn a global context, there are about 1.3 million people killed and about 50 million injured in car accidents every year,a says Mr Gerrits. The monetary cost is also sobering, with South Africaas economy losing more than R300 billion annually.a

CrashDetech is affordable, can be downloaded onto cell phones regardless of whether the user has insurance, and is backed by the countryas largest independent register of emergency services and personnel to ensure accident victims get help as soon as possible.

The device springs into action as soon as an impact is sensed: An automated voice begins an emergency countdown. Now it is on to New York for the opportunity to asella a panel on the social benefits and scalability of his business.a

Although he is looking forward to pitching his idea, Mr Gerrits acknowledges that his chances to walk away with the lionas share of the million-dollar prize rely not only on his belief in his product and his ability to make the judging panel believe in it, too, but also the backing of his home country: he needs South Africans to start casting votes for CrashDetech to influence the final decision.

A total of US$250A 000 is based on votes alone, and if you wish to support your fellow countryman and his world-changing, life-saving innovation, go to www.theventure.com/global/en/finalists/crashdetech.

Touch creates a healing bond in health care

May 24, 2016 5:22 am Published by

Touch creates a healing bond in health care Touch is a powerful tool in medicine.

In contemporary health care, touch contact between a doctor’s hand and a patient appears to be on its way out. Touch creates a human bond that is particularly needed in this increasingly hands-off, impersonal age.

For thousands of years, touch has been recognized as an essential part of the healing arts. Native American healers relied on touch to draw out sickness, and kings and queens were long believed to possess the “Royal Touch,” through which the mere laying on of hands could heal.

We have been studying this phenomenon in our own institution, looking at the effect of touch not only on patients but on the parents of patients admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit.

The project, called ROSE (Reach Out, Soothe, and Embrace), sought to determine whether increasing opportunities to touch patients could promote parent well-being without compromising patient safety.

Instead of merely determining whether patients could be taken off the ventilator or fed, we also identified patients who could be safely touched and even held in their parents’ arms.

First, increasing opportunities for touch does not compromise patient safety. But when touch is encouraged in the right ways and for the right reasons, it is good for patients, family, friends and health professionals alike. Medicines and words both have healing power, but so does touch, and it is perhaps the most widely available, financially responsible and safest tool in the healing arts. When we touch, we connect, and when we connect, we create a healing bond for which there is simply no substitute.

Nonprofit exec turnover more turbulent than previously thought North Carolina State University

May 24, 2016 5:11 am Published by

New research from North Carolina State University finds that turnover among executive leaders at nonprofit organizations is often plagued by problems – with very few transitional periods mirroring the scenarios painted in the professional literature. “And, because executive turnover is inevitable, it’s important to pay attention to what organizations can do to limit any adverse impacts turnover can have on a nonprofit and its mission.”

To better understand the challenges involved in nonprofit executive turnover, Stewart interviewed 40 executives of nonprofit organizations about their experiences during their transition into leadership roles.

“One of the things I learned was that nonprofit boards do not become more functional during times of turmoil – so if leadership turnover stems from problems in the board itself, a new executive won’t resolve that problem,” Stewart says. “Too little” boards offered virtually no support or oversight to executives; “too much” boards tried to micromanage executives; and “just right” boards used the turnover to assess their organizational needs and hire an executive who was equipped to address those needs.

When interviewing the executives about why their predecessors had left their organizations, Stewart found that only nine of previous executives had left due to “voluntary retirement.”

Michigan International Speedway grant helps revamp once dormant school library | MLive.com Michigan International Speedway grant helps revamp once dormant school library

JACKSON, MI A place known for noise Michigan International Speedway is helping improve a place that’s normally known for being quiet an elementary school library.

One year ago, Jackson’s Frost Elementary School library was a space for faculty meetings and storage. After revamping the space in the fall and reopening it to students in the winter, a $5,000 grant from MIS Cares is helping further develop a makerspace in the library, which includes adding Legos, K’Nex, a bead bracelet station, technology and other creative activities.

Principal Joe Zessin started at the school in October. There should be an element of innovation, fun and excitement for them in the school.”

Frost has digitized the books into a computer system, bought new books to appeal to students, created the makerspace which includes some of Zessin’s Legos from his childhood and hired librarian Kathy Steenrod.

Zessin’s mother, who was a librarian at Hope College for 25 years, helped go through the old books with Steenrod and assisted in the application process for the grant.

Frost was one of six schools to receive an MIS Cares grant. Only one school per district could apply for the grant, with 13 schools applying for a grant in the spring. MIS also awarded $50,000 in grants across six schools last fall.

“We found it really great that they want to create this space,” said MIS Manager of Media Relations Brad Kuhbander. Some of the materials include pieces for a Lego wall, six iPads with a charging station, an Apple TV, a 48-inch flat screen TV, two Osmo gaming systems, additional Lego sets and swivel chairs.

Three classes a day come to the library, which is named for former NFL football coach Tony Dungy’s mother, Cleomae Dungy a former Jackson Public Schools teacher.
