A community trail in the works

April 24, 2016 4:13 am Published by

As an ongoing project, the City of Nickerson is working to provide the community with a free walking trail.

So far, the trail circles the Nickerson Elementary School and has been made possible from grants from the Sunflower Foundation, Engelland Construction, City of Nickerson, fundraising, NICKS and the NES Student Fund, according to Daana Heinlein, the school nurse for USD 309. One fundraising event for this trail included the Jump Rope for Heart at NES.

Plans began when Nickerson Elementary School found that the dirt trail the gym classes had been using wasnat as safe as it could be.

Wanting a safer alternative, the school began looking for grants to provide their classes with an easily accessible walking trail.

After many opinions were bounced around, a final idea spouted a project that would be good for not only the school itself, but for the entire community.

After the first grant was given, the city got together and decided that the new trail could not only be used for the students at NES, but also as a way for the citizens of Nickerson to have a nearby place to take an evening walk, bike ride, or maybe to just work out with a friend.

However, the original idea has expanded a great deal, Heinlein said, and now there are plans to extend the trail at NES down Nickerson Boulevard and around the city park.

To complete construction for the Community Trail, Nickerson needs your support, Heinlein said.

aThe grant applicationas deadline for the extended construction is May 2. We have been promoting the trail like crazy and are still seeking letters of support, petition signatures, and any other support people could give,a she said.

Over the past few weeks, the district had been promoting a naming contest where community members and students were allowed to submit a name for the trail.

Various posters about the trail and contest were posted around the school, and emails were sent out to the teachers and staff hoping that word would spread faster about the trail. It is constructed out of smooth concrete and is very accessible for walking and other modes of transportation including skateboards, bicycles, and scooters.

Heinlein said itas been discussed that a couple of benches and lighting should be added to the trail for those who enjoy walking at earlier or later times.

The City of Nickerson is asking its residents to stand behind it so the trail can happen.

USU expands land grant mission under outgoing presidency

April 24, 2016 3:07 am Published by

Utah State University President Stan Albrecht, who is retiring this year, poses for a portrait outside of the Old Main building at USU in Logan on Wednesday, April 20, 2016.

LOGAN Stan Albrecht’s journey from growing up as a ranch kid in Fremont, Utah, to the conclusion of an 11-year presidency at Utah State University is the kind that few have experienced.

That influence is part of the vision for land grant institutions to meet the needs of the state, a vision that began with 19th century federal legislation that has expanded under Albrecht’s leadership further beyond USU’s trademark agricultural focus.

“He defined the land grant in what I think is the true meaning of the land grant, which is we are the state’s institution of higher learning.

While USU’s regional campus presence has more than doubled during Albrecht’s tenure, the land grant mission also drives growth in local research.

Financial counseling program key to Habitat success stories

April 24, 2016 2:00 am Published by

Financial counseling program key to Habitat success stories – Opinion – Gaston Gazette – Gastonia, NC Since 1989, Habitat for Humanity has been helping Gaston County people become homeowners.Lately, however, the local Habitat organization has needed a helping hand itself. Too few people looking to become Habitat homeowners had too much debt and poor credit to take on the monthly payments that a Habitat home requires.Being financially able to make the payments, like sweat equity and community donations, is part of the successful Habitat formula that has made homeowners of countless people far and near who never imagined they would achieve the American dream. In Gaston County, Habitat has built 108 homes for new owners since the organization got off the ground. As word got around about Habitat’s need, Gaston County does what it always does people came together to see that the need is met.Leaders from Gaston Together, Keeping Families Intact and the YMCA got together with local church leaders and representatives from crisis assistance agencies and came up with a program it’s called Resource Connection Gateway — to help individuals and families straighten out their finances and leave poverty behind. Ideally, they will become eligible for a Habitat home.Good ideas remain only ideas without money to help them succeed and once again, Gaston County stepped up.Private individuals wrote checks. To get help, one must agree to meet certain requirements, just like getting a Habitat house.Once again, Gaston County has come together to help people in need.

Albemarle schools among finalists for $10M grant

April 24, 2016 1:03 am Published by

The Albemarle County school system is a semifinalist for a $10 million grant aimed at reworking the traditional public high school experience.

If the application is successful, the division will have $2 million a year for five years to give some county students the option to design their own path through high school.

For the county schools, that means pushing toward a model that gives students more choice in how they meet traditional high school benchmarks.

Students still would be required to pass state Standards of Learning tests and pass the required number of credits to graduate, but they would not be forced to follow the traditional high school course load to do so.

The schools envision a model where students are guided through their education by a team of teachers, mentors and advisers, rather than by following a traditional seven-period regimen of rote classes.

Though Ratliff sees a need for radical change in how high schools treat their students, the purpose of applying for the XQ grant is not to impose one curriculum model on every student.

“The piece that really is of interest to me is that schools should not be focused on creating cookie-cutter pathways, because different kids have different ways of thinking about what they like to do, what their interests are,” said Albemarle Schools Superintendent Pam Moran.

For Moran, the grant application is as much about driving new ideas within the schools as it is making distinct changes to the way students are taught.

The next step for the county schools is to present to XQ a fleshed-out model of how they would spend the grant money.
