Moak:Lottery winners’ ‘foundation’ is bogus

March 17, 2016 11:56 pm Published by

aa the Tom and Cathy Rea Foundation is not registered as a charitable organization in Missouri or Mississippi,a Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood notes.

Hoodas office issued a warning Friday about the scam, which comes in the form of an email or LinkedIn post, similar in form to the ancient-but-stubbornly-persistent Nigerian Letter Scam. Rest assured, if you really won something, the attorneys who would be sending it would know how to get to the point. The letter goes on to state that the whole deal will evaporate if the recipient lets anyone know about it, even going so far as to allege there have been a number of attempted fraudulent claims against the foundation, yet you somehow can avoid all that if you just cooperate and not tell anyone.Several errors appear in the document, such as using the term aPound Sterlings,a when (as every grammarian knows) the proper term is aPounds Sterling.a A Also, abiblea is used, instead of aBible.a The scammers have finally discovered Spellcheck, but it doesnat catch stuff like this. The pitch is tied to something that really happened (in this case, the Reasa Powerball win), giving it an air of legitimacy. Finally, all such scams have some kind of ahook,a in an attempt to reassure you this isnat a scam.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park receives 2016 Active Trails Grant From The National Park Foundation

WASHINGTON Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP) is one of 25 national parks selected to receive a 2016 Active Trails grant from the National Park Foundation, the official charity of America’s national parks.

This grant will be used to engage 120 youth in a new water-based recreation program, the Junior Ranger Kayak Program. It will also allow park staff to enhance its knowledge and comfort hosting kayaking as a new recreational activity in Cuyahoga Valley National Park, as well as provide funding for training and equipment for water-based search and rescue.

Now in its eighth year, the Active Trails program supports healthy living by getting people out and active in national parks through projects promoting recreation and exercise.

Collaborating with CVNP on this project is Kent State University’s Department of Recreation Services, which will assist with providing the kayaking programs.

How to Leave a Bequest to Charity Without Hurting Your Family

March 17, 2016 11:45 pm Published by

Especially for Millennials, a generation known for both its shaky finances and strong social commitment, estate planning can be a way to help out a beloved cause without actually going into hock.

As Russell James of Texas Tech University noted in his research on the subject, among “adults aged 55 and above who have completed a will or trust there is an increased trend to include a charity as a beneficiary,” with likelihood of estate giving going up by nearly a quarter from 2000 to 2010. Planned giving, including estate planning, has become a major facet of fundraising drives at virtually every level.

The appeal is simple: it’s a way of knowing that ideas and causes you care about are being taken care of.

Words Matter: How Should We Talk About Impact Investing?

March 17, 2016 11:27 pm Published by

Yesterday, I had the privilege of joining more than 600 people on a webinar to discuss important new findings.

Thanks to a group of partners that included the Omidyar Network, Ford Foundation and MacArthur Foundation, together with the Global Impact Investing Network and the Global Social Impact Investing Steering Group, we unveiled important new research that tracked and analyzed coverage of the topic of impact investing in traditional and social media over a 12-month period. As with any movement, words matter and can play a powerful role in informing, educating and activating those on the sidelines.

The good news is that impact investing has enjoyed mostly positive coverage and engagement in both traditional and social media. We must continue to commit ourselves to measuring the “impact” in impact investing. For instance, the Case Foundation has partnered with B Lab to bring new tools to companies everywhere who want to measure their social impacts “Measure What Matters” impact assessment tool has engaged more than 40,000 companies to date an important step forward.

The research also shines a light on how different audiences, investors, policymakers, entrepreneurs, philanthropists and high net worth individuals are engaging with each narrative, as it relates to a particular issue area. Indeed, within the field we recognize that it is decidedly unhelpful to paint impact investing as a silver bullet, but rather it becomes a new arrow in our quiver as we seek to champion all means in our efforts toward social impact.

Midwest Central High School receives grant to help native plants

March 17, 2016 11:22 pm Published by

Midwest Central High School was awarded project funding from the Central Chapter of the Illinois Native Plant Society (INPS). The Mason County Chapter of Pheasants Forever is donating additional time, resources, and $1,500 to help cover project costs.The Illinois Native Plant Society is a volunteer organization dedicated to promoting the study, appreciation and conservation of native plants and natural communities in Illinois. Over the past 15 years, the Central Chapter’s fund raising efforts have allowed it to award almost $50,000 in grants to support a variety of native plant-related projects.Representatives of the Central Chapter met recently with school district superintendent, Todd Hellrigel, and teacher, Julie DeSutter project coordinator, to view other ongoing projects at the school and to present the first grant payment. mainImageContainerInnerHTML += ”+htmlencode(mainImageData_caption)+”; mainImageContainerInnerHTML += ”+mainImageData_caption+”; mainImageContainerInnerHTML_sm += ”+mainImageData_credit+”; mainImageContainerInnerHTML_sm += ”+mainImageData_caption+”; $(‘#art-main-image-credit-container_sm’).css(‘width’,smimgwidth).css(‘padding’,’3px ‘+(mainImageData_leftPadding – 3)+’px 0 0’); $(‘#art-main-image-caption-container_sm’).css(‘width’,sm_img.width).css(‘padding’,’5px 0 0 ‘+(mainImageData_leftPadding + 3)+’px’); $(‘#art-main-image-caption-container’).css(‘width’,img.width).css(‘padding’,’5px 0 0 ‘+mainImageData_leftPadding+’px’); $(‘#art-main-image-credit-container’).css(‘width’,img.width).css(‘padding’,’5px ‘+(mainImageData_leftPadding)+’px 0 0’);
