FLINT, MI — Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores has pledged to match up to $1 million in donations during a telethon to raise money towards Flint water crisis relief.

Gores made the announcement Thursday, March 10, days ahead of the “Flint Water Crisis: 4 Our Families” by WDIV-TV, running from 6 a.m.-8 p.m. on March.

The broadcast is also set to air on WILX-TV, WOOD-TV, WEYI-TV, and 9&10 in Northern Michigan.

Proceeds raised during the telethon will be donated to the Flint Child Health & Development Fund established at the Community Foundation of Greater Flint to provide ongoing and long-term care for children in the community.

“What’s happened in Flint is wrong, but there are things we can do to turn it around,” said Gores in a statement. “Children and families affected by this crisis need our help and we can make the biggest impact for them by working together.

Gores, who started the FlintNOW organization to garner aid from private sector support to aid in the water crisis, previously donated a total of $1 million to the Flint Child Health & Development Fund, the United Way of Genesee County’s Flint Water Fund, and the American Red Cross.

The Pistons recently announced $500,000 in donations from the team’s players and executives, while FlintNOW announced a partnership with NBA legend Magic Johnson to develop programs focused on early education and scholarships.

“We are partnering with likeminded organizations that take a long view and people who are committed to making a lasting difference for the people of Flint,” said Gores, who previously pledged $10 million to water crisis relief.

Marla Drutz, vice president and general manager of WDIV-TV, said “Thanks to this partnership with Tom Gores and FlintNOW, on March 15 people that want to help the children of Flint will have an opportunity to double the impact of every dollar they give to the Flint Child Health & Development Fund.

“When viewers make that donation, they can rest assured that their gift will go directly to providing critical interventions for Flint youth,” she said.

Art Van Furniture has also pledged up to $100,000 towards the telethon.

“Our heartfelt thanks goes out to all at Art Van Furniture for their generous donation and assistance in organizing and staffing this Telethon,” said Kathi Horton, president of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint.

Health Day spurs early entry

March 10, 2016 5:56 am Published by

It will start at Contra Costa College in LA-100 and branch out to various areas on campus, Grant Coordinator Nancy Rynd said.

“Health Services Day is an opportunity that the college offers to 150 WCCUSD high school Health Academy students from Pinole Valley High School, De Anza High School and Richmond High School,” Rynd said. These includenursing, health and human services, biotechnology, medical assisting, emergency medical technician (EMT), and certified nursing assistant (CNA) programs, she said.

As well as the educational presentations that will be offered, the culminating lecture will inform students about concurrent enrollment opportunities offered to high school seniors, Rynd said.

“We start to prepare them so that maybe in grades 10 and 12 they actually start their college career,” she said.

Nursing department Chairperson Cheri Etheredge has coordinated Health Services Day six times before, forwarding the opportunity to ninth and 10th graders to attend the college for a day and have the opportunity to see what kind of classes the college offers. “We want to get everything we can in the 20 minutes we have.”

The CNA program has a unique aspect to it that garnishes the setting, and emphasizes talking to current high school students.

“In working with some grants three years ago we started a program with the CNA program where we arrange for 15 high school kids to come to the college in the afternoon during their senior year and take the courses for the CNA program,” Rynd said.

The CNA presenters will consist of four students who completed the CNA program while in high school last December, Rynd said.

The CNA program takes one semester to complete. Select Month March 2016 February 2016 December 2015 November 2015 October 2015 September 2015 July 2015 May 2015 April 2015 March 2015 February 2015 January 2015 December 2014 November 2014 October 2014 September 2014 December 2013 April 2010

NASHUA – For more than 42 years, The Youth Council has been counting on donors like United Way of Greater Nashua to ensure that Greater Nashua families are able to continue to build the right skills they need to be strong, effective parents, raising children and teens who make good decisions and stay on track.

With a $50,900 grant from the United Way, The Youth Council is able to continue to be the safety net and the “go to” resources to these families.

“Many of our friends and neighbors are losing loved ones to overdoses and addiction more than ever before,” said Betsy Houde, executive director of The Youth Council. It is because of United Way and the local grants, contracts and donations we are able to secure that we continue to serve families.”

Here’s how The Youth Council helps:

13- to 17-year-olds arrested for a first-time offense are assessed for drug and alcohol use while being held accountable for their behavior, with a 98 percent success rate.

Overwhelmed parents attend classes to build their strengths and parenting skills, with 97 percent reporting increased confidence in raising their children.

83 percent of children in counseling improve their daily functioning and 92 percent identify healthy ways to cope with their issues without using alcohol or drugs.

“We have partnered with The Youth Council for many years,” said Mike Apfelberg, president of United Way of Greater Nashua. “The programs which United Way of Greater Nashua funds at The Youth Council are all aimed at ensuring that at-risk teens end up back in school becoming productive young adults.”
