Lassen Park Foundation reaches goal to build youth camp

The Lassen Park Foundation has reached its goal of raising more than $400,000 in private contributions to complete Volcano Adventure Camp at Lassen Volcanic National Park.

The National Park Service has allocated $200,000 for the project.

The camp, which is designed to accommodate school and youth groups several of which include at-risk children will open this summer during the 100th anniversaries of Lassen Volcanic National Park and the National Park Service.

“None of the park’s existing campgrounds were built to accommodate school or youth groups,” said Lassen Superintendent Steve Gibbons. “That put us over the top and assured that the youth campground will be finished this summer and is the best possible way to commemorate Lassen Volcanic National Park’s and National Park Service’s 100th anniversaries, as it is a gift to future generations of park visitors.”

Now that funding for completion of Volcano Adventure Camp has been achieved, the foundation’s Executive Director Jennifer Finnegan is announcing plans to fund an endowment to assure that youth camping grants continue to be available and expanded for groups of at risk children.

“It’s a gift that changes these kids’ lives for the better.”

Finnegan said the LPF will open opportunities to apply for youth camping grants at the new Volcano Adventure Camp in springtime.

During the evening, organizations that have received grants from the Davison Community Fund presented on “the changes that happened.”

Presenters included Jan Lebert of Outreach East and Assistant Fire Chief Skip Davis of the Davison-Richfield Fire Authority.

The local committee advises grants from a permanent endowment started in 2004 to benefit the City of Davison, Davison Township and Richfield Township, said Mary Jo Herbig, Director of Communication for the Community Foundation of Greater Flint.

Sue Kenkel, principal at Davison High School, arranged for a district wide jeans day to benefit the Davison Community Fund. “So we’re closer to the goal.”

So far, total endowed assets from the Davison Community Fund and its associated funds are $179,194.

In 2015, the Davison Community Fund gave grants to Davison Community Schools, Hahn Garden Greenhouse, of $950 and to Outreach East, Davison Food Reclamation Project, $1,421.90.

The event was catered by MD Sports Bar & Grill.

Southeastern Illinois Community Foundation has added Amanda Lessley to its staff with the creation of a new development position to better serve its growing regional family of affiliated funds.

She currently serves on the Jasper County Community Foundation Advisory Board and is coordinating 100 Women Who Care Jasper County, a new giving circle designed to engage women in local philanthropy.

“Amanda’s professional background as well as her enthusiasm for local philanthropy will be of great value to our organization and the communities in our region,” explains Joedy Hightower, President/CEO of Southeastern Illinois Community Foundation.

The Farmington/Farmington Hills Foundation for Youth & Families last week presented a $2,300 grant to the City of Farmington Hills After School Youth Program.

The program, which serves more than 400 middle school students per day, will use the grant to support activities at three locations: the Costick Activities Center, Jon Grant Community Center, and Farmington Hills Ice Arena.

GLASTONBURY Behind many of the stately Main Street houses are old barns that harken back to a time when the town’s focus was on agriculture.

At the back of the Town Hall/Academy School complex is a 4,000 square-foot barn painted red and topped by a pair cupolas with weathervanes of a brass saw and hammer.

The town recently received a $320,000 grant from the state’s Small Town Economic Assistance Program to finish the $500,000 facility.
