An after-school running program for girls received a $7,200 grant from the Ironman Foundation this week.

Girls on the Run Southern Utah, a local branch of an international nonprofit that incorporates life lessons and confidence-building team exercises while training girls to run, will be able to expand its program to 30 new girls with the funding, according to a news release.

The organization opened its Southern Utah program this year, with girls from Vista Charter School and Sandstone Elementary School meeting twice each week to train, work through problems and support each other.

Thanks to the grant, the plan is to expand into new schools next year.

Guest Opinion: Phil is right here

April 29, 2015 5:00 pm Published by

Back then, I did not know it was Phil’s Day, who Phil was, or where Phil had been. Three years later, as I sit typing this piece in a beautiful university building made possible by private support, and as we anticipate the fourth annual Phil’s Day event all over our campus, I can’t help but look around and think, “Phil is right here.”

All of these accomplishments that UI students are proud to claim are possible because of the private support that we ourselves have received whether through scholarships, beautiful and modern buildings to meet and learn in, or support for the faculty that helps us every step of the way.

As Phil Day launches, students now know who “Phil” is

This year’s Phil’s Day festivities, set to occur today, will include postcard signings to send thank-yous to donors, the tagging of buildings and programs made possible by donor donations, and the visit of guest speaker and philanthropy contributor Jerre Stead at the IMU.

Marshall, who has been the foundation president since August 2006, has spearheaded a number of philanthropy initiatives, including Phil’s Day, which was launched in 2012.

“The campaign for faculty and staff is usually held in the fall, but staff are encouraged to support philanthropy efforts throughout the year,” said Joni Troester, the director for human resources services and a We Are Phil faculty and staff co-head.

Anthony Lehnertz, a UI student and the president of the Student Philanthropy Group, said he has seen definite signs that awareness has grown in the student population.

“One thing that’s kind of tough with awareness of philanthropy is we probably won’t see a huge impact until five or ten years down the line when students that are becoming aware today have the monetary ability to give back to the University of Iowa,” Lehnertz said.

The Clinton Foundation as a money-laundering scheme

April 29, 2015 5:00 pm Published by

The scheme works like this: collect millions of dollars in foreign money, dump it into a foreign charity, pretend that the law prohibits you from ever disclosing the identities of those foreign donors to the foreign charity, then have the foreign charity bundle all the cash and send it to the Clinton Foundation. Then, when the time comes whether it be a Clinton Foundation conference or a lavish Clinton Foundation trip overseas make sure those individuals get some me-time with the Clintons.

By 2013, the main Clinton Foundation entity the Bill, Hillary, and Chelsea Clinton Foundation housed only a handful of charitable initiatives, the largest of which existed solely to serve the Clintons, via their conference series and the Clinton presidential library, rather than truly charitable causes.

CEO and philanthropist Rapson to speak at Charleston breakfast

April 29, 2015 5:00 pm Published by

The President and CEO of Kresge Foundation and philanthropist Rip Rapson will be the featured speaker at public breakfast at Charleston’s Four Points Sheraton Hotel Thursday hosted by Philanthropy West Virginia and The Valley Foundation“>Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation.

The Kresge Foundation is a national foundation that aims to expand opportunities for vulnerable people living in American cities. That’s not what motivates people to make their communities better.”

Rapson helped Detroit emerge from municipal bankruptcy in 2014 when he and the Kresge Foundation initiated a partnership known as the “Grand Bargain” among the philanthropic community, city pensioners, the State of Michigan and the Detroit Institute of Arts. “In West Virginia I suspect, much like Detroit, people have left and chosen to raise their families elsewhere. But what’s so striking is how often those folks come home.”

Even though Rapson is not a West Virginia native, he is impressed by the spirit and toughness of people here, even through the hardest of times.

“I don’t pretend to know enough the West Virginia experience, but when I look at the resilience of this state, it’s just stunning,” he said.

In Charleston, Rapson will showcase similarities between West Virginia and Michigan, and how philanthropy solved challenges in Michigan which can be duplicated here.
