Program on Information Science awarded Sloan Foundation grant

MIT Libraries’ Program on Information Science awarded Sloan Foundation grant | MIT News It aims to leverage ongoing multidisciplinary collaborations and theoretical advances in computation, statistics, law, and social science to improve reuse and replicability in empirical social science, promoting archiving of, and access to, large-scale confidential data. The work contributes to the capacity of the libraries to support researchers in managing confidential information.

“Both academic research and information services are increasingly based on detailed digital information about people and their behavior,” Altman says. This project will provide understandable, usable tools and policies for managing confidential research data.”

Altman is joined in the 30-month project by four Harvard collaborators: Merce Crosas, director of data science at Harvard’s Institute for Quantitative Social Science; Urs Gasser, executive director of the Berkman Center for Internet and Society; Gary King the Albert J. This collaboration builds upon a previous successful project supported by a National Science Foundation Frontier grant.

Another season of ice skating set to wrap up

February 24, 2015 5:00 pm Published by

(WANE) It’s been another record setting year for attendance at the Headwaters Park Ice Skating Rink. The 12th season of skating will wrap-up on Sunday, March 1 at 8 pm.

The previous attendance record of 26,106 skaters set during the 2011-2012 season was broken this past Saturday, and Geoff Paddock, Executive Director of the Headwaters Park Alliance hopes to crack the 27,000 skater mark. If that were to happen, since the rink opened in November of 2003, all-time attendance would be about 258,000.

Thanks to a number of foundations, including the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne, the Auer Foundation, the Lincoln Financial Foundation, PNC Charitable Trusts, and the Lupke Family Foundation, the rink has not raised rates since it opened in 2003.

Increases in Charitable Giving Projected, But Where Will That Money Land?

February 24, 2015 5:00 pm Published by

A new report from the Lilly School of Philanthropy projects a healthy increase in giving over 2015 and 2016, and the increases, if they occur, are nothing to sneeze at on the surface.

That said, this first report projects an increase in charitable giving of 4.8% in 2015 and of 4.9% in 2016, spread in the manner exhibited below:

Itemized giving, however, is projected to increase at an average 6% rate through 2016.

“Greater positive growth in giving by corporations for the years 2015 and 2016 will be offset by slight growth in employment rates in preceding years.
