Almost Home restaurant will host the Putnam County Community Foundation‘s Youth Philanthropy Night on Thursday, March 5.

Since its inception in 2006, the Putnam County Youth Philanthropy Committee has provided more than $25,000 in funding for more than 50 youth-led projects in Putnam County.

Grants awarded by the Youth Philanthropy Committee are made possible by the unrestricted Community Grants endowments administered by the Community Foundation.

Lake County Community Foundation names new executive director

Teeuwissen brings a strong commitment to the Lake County community and more than 35 years of nonprofit and management experience, according to a news release.

Teeuwissen has held senior management positions with organizations such as the American Ballet Theater and Dance Theater of Harlem. He was also executive director of Chicago’s Joffrey Ballet from 2001-08, significantly expanding the organization’s outreach efforts and after-school programs, the release stated.

Anne Reusche, chair of the Lake County Community Foundation, said Teeuwissen has a “proven track record of adapting and enhancing programs to meet the needs of diverse communities,” adding she looks forward to his leadership in Lake County.

“Lake County is where I live it’s my community, where I’m invested,” Teeuwissen said of his new role. “I look forward to connected with the Foundation’s many grant recipients, donors and partners, and collaborating to make the region stronger.”

Since its founding in 2003, the Lake County Community Foundation, as affiliate of the Chicago Community Trust, has contributed more than $2.5 million to 80 nonprofit organizations that support basic human needs, community development, education and health throughout the community.

Teeuwissen received a Master’s degree of science in management and a certificate in public management from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business in California, and his Board of Regent’s degree from West Virginia State University.

Blue Bell raises $10,000 for cats in need – Coastline Pilot

The recent Cats Meow fundraiser generated $10,000 for the Blue Bell Foundation for Cats in Laguna Beach.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the facility’s Community Cat Fund, which provides money for cats placed by the Laguna Beach Animal Shelter and animals placed under qualifying hardship circumstances.

The event also featured a new category of recognition for volunteers called the Blue Bell Cat awards.

Attendees included Rick Balzer, chairman of the Laguna Beach Community Foundation; Ruben Flores, chairman of the Laguna Beach Beautification Council and owner of Laguna Nursery; Larry Nokes, past president of the Laguna Beach Chamber of Commerce; Jorja Puma, president of the Laguna Beach Garden Club; and Laura Tarbox, Laguna Beach Community Foundation board member.

Blue Bell board Chairwoman Susan Hamil and her husband, John, received a commemorative placard honoring them for more than 25 years of service to the nonprofit organization.

Give Where You Live to raise millions for Collier County nonprofits

The initiative, Give Where You live 30, is the first annual event of its kind to raise awareness and money for 30 nonprofit organizations that serve Collier County residents.

The event is sponsored by the Community Foundation of Collier County and the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation.

The Community Foundation of Collier County is a tax-exempt, public and charitable fund, established in 1985 to increase and focus private philanthropy within the county. The Foundation supports education and basic human services, helping grantees to make strategic contributions that achieve specific measurable outcomes.

The Community Foundation and the Schulze Family Foundation are partnering to offer a $300,000 matching fund. After the event ends, the Foundation will determine each nonprofit’s proportionate share of the match by dividing the total amount each charity raised by the total amount raised by all participating nonprofits.

New Horizons of Southwest Florida is one of the 30 nonprofit charities chosen from over 450 to participate in the 24-hour event. Here, students in Estero are given new book bags and school supplies.

“Our goal is to raise $200K,” said Debra Haley, Executive Director for New Horizons of SWFL.

New Horizons is dedicated to helping at-risk children and teens who are growing up in an environment of poverty, academic failure and hopelessness. When New Horizons began in 2002, there were only 20 children in the program.

Today, New Horizons reaches over 350 children and teens annually in Naples, Bonita Springs and Estero. New Horizons offers young mothers and toddlers a mentoring and English skills readiness program.

New Horizons offers students a multitude of services, including after-school tutoring.

Future plans for New Horizons include opening a fifth site in North Naples, enabling an additional 40 students to be enrolled in Super Kids Club.

Five organizations receive $20000 grants

Five county organizations were recipients of $20,000 Ripley County Community Foundation Sally Morris Community Impact Grants. They included the Batesville Area Resource Center, Batesville Community Fire Association, Morris Volunteer Fire Association, Southeast Indiana Health Center and Tyson Activity Center.A

Streator encouraged community members to support these five organizations, as well as other nonprofits, and their upcoming fundraisers because some of the proceeds will go toward the matching grants.A

Community has a stake in hospital sale

If the sale is approved, Prime would assume the operations of Mercy, currently owned by Trinity Health, a Livonia-based nonprofit that operates several Michigan hospitals.

One of Mercy Hospitals current operations is the Peoplesa Clinic.

The clinic gets some of its funding from a nearly $500,000 endowment to support the Peoplesa Clinic bequeathed by Port Huron businesswoman and philanthropist Helen David, who died in 2006 at the age of 91.

The clinic also has an endowment of $434,946 through the St. Joseph Mercy, as well as whether and how the Peoplesa Clinic would continue to be funded.

aWe think that disclosure is owed to the public and to those of us who have worked with the Peoplesa Clinic on a regular basis,a Touma said.

Currently, the Peoplesa Clinic and the Mercy Hospital Foundation are not independent charities separate from Mercy Hospital.

The clinic is held under the charitable corporate umbrella of Mercy, and the hospital foundation is a department or informal entity within the Mercy Hospital system, according to the Community Foundation of St. Joseph Mercy Health System, Trinity Health in Ann Arbor, and Prime released a joint statement Wednesday in an email to the Times Herald.

According to the statement, aSaint Joseph Mercy Health System is working with Prime to ensure the Peoplesa Clinic, a clinic which serves the poor and underserved, will continue its current mission in providing charitable care to the larger community.a

aSaint Joseph Mercy Health System is working with Prime to determine the appropriate treatment of donor-restricted funds to ensure that they will remain in the community and be used in a manner consistent with the intent of its donors.a

Specifics as to the organizational structuring and oversight of the clinic were unanswered due to an agreement with Prime to limit public statements while the sale is under review by the Attorney Generalas office, according to the statement.

Touma said his clients and others in the community would like disclosure now, and that there is no need to wait for the Attorney General to finish its review, which could still take months.

The Helen David trust provides only part of the clinicas funding, but other donors and potential donors to the clinic have been asking for assurances that their gifts will be used as intended, Touma said.

aIf someone wants to make a gift, they want to make sure the gift will be used for its intended purpose. Joseph Mercy and Community Mental Health announced Friday.

The clinic will continue to be structured and operated by Mercy, which will lease the space from Community Mental Health.

aThis is good news and a step in the right direction,a Maiers said of the relocation.

aCommunity Mental Health will be a great partner for the Peoplesa Clinic. Weall accept whatever decision he makes,a Kelly said.

If the community is due a share of the transaction, Kelly said, aWe think it would be appropriate that if there are proceeds to be allocated here, that they be allocated to a fund within the Community Foundation for the benefit of the community.a

The Community Foundation said the third issue is what happens to money that has been donated to the Mercy Hospital Foundation.

Like the Peoplesa Clinic, the foundation has accepted community membersa charitable donations.
