86 local nonprofit leaders who rely on grants from the Heinz Endowment met at the invitation of the foundation to hear about changes to the foundations grant awarding process. The foundation did not give specifics concerning the changes, but stated that they would focus on sustainability in Pittsburgh.
Grant Oliphant, the Endowment's president, states that the city is at a pivotal point, hence the changes to their grant process and focus. The Endowment believes that Pittsburgh is in the midst of transitioning from an industrial past, and that the timing now is critical to have the most impact on the dynamic growth of the city.
According to him Oliphant, one of the potential changes will be grants that are larger in size, but fewer awarded, and far more input earlier in the grant funding process.
