South End Museum Trust Grant

Organization - South End Museum Trust
Grant Amount - $10,000
Foundation - Mott Foundation
Grant Purpose - The South End Museum Trust was established to commemorate the forced removal of people of color from the South End in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape during the apartheid period. The museum was started by volunteers and community members, many of them former residents with very little expertise in museums, especially museums of conscience. Mott provided a planning grant to the trust to bring a consultant on board to assess its strengths and weaknesses, develop a work plan on its capacity needs, make recommendations on how to secure its long-term sustainability, and refine a vision and mission for the museum. Through additional support from Mott, the museum is currently implementing the outcomes of this strategic planning process, focusing specifically on developing the museum as a community resource that can contribute to promoting healing and reconciliation not only in the Eastern Cape, but also nationally. The grant increase will enable the museum to engage fundraising and marketing experts to assist with efforts to ensure its financial sustainability.
