Grant Purpose - This grant will provide continued general purpose support to the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation, one of the leading organizations dealing with issues of transitional justice, truth and reconciliation commissions, and peace building in Africa. The institute focuses on the challenges of reconciliation and nation building in South Africa, following the many years of racial conflict as a result of the system of apartheid. The institute works with communities affected by conflict, conducts research on issues of transitional justice and reconciliation, supports efforts aimed at peace building, and uses the experience of South Africa's peaceful transition to democracy to assist and advise other countries, particularly in Africa, to find nonviolent solutions to their own conflicts.
