Grant Purpose - This grant supports activities to promote greater public participation in decisionmaking and to mobilize community resources to address critical issues facing local communities in Croatia. The Organization for Civil Initiatives works with local community leaders and grassroots citizen groups to build capacity to identify community needs and implement long-term solutions. In addition, the grantee provides information, training, and consultations to local government authorities and nongovernmental organizations on community organizing, cross-sector cooperation, local resource development, and rural economic development. Over the last two years, the grantee worked directly with local governments, nongovernmental organizations, and community leaders in seven counties in eastern and southern Croatia on a wide range of activities, including establishing forums of civic initiatives, strengthening a new community foundation, building the capacity of village boards, and providing training on community organizing. The grantee is based in Osijek, Croatia, and works primarily in eastern and southern Croatia.
