The Coca-Cola Foundation has awarded a $1.5 million grant to Project Last Mile, a non-profit that works in 14 African countries, to help immunize children against diseases such as HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, and AIDS, reports the New York Times.
The move comes as the number of children missing out on vaccinations through routine health services is at its highest since 2009 and the number of people fully vaccinated against COVID-19 remains low, per a press release.
"We believe the private sector and innovations are playing an ever-growing role in safeguarding immunization systems against further shocks," says Marie-Ange Saraka-Yao, managing director of the Global Environment & Technology Foundation, which is administering the grant.
Project Last Mile will use the grant to help innovators scale up solutions that improve access, availability, and uptake of immunizations, including but not limited to COVID-19 vaccines, per the press release.
