Strong links with Arctic countries are mutually beneficial to Scotland, the first minister has told a forum in Edinburgh.

Nicola Sturgeon highlighted Scotland’s developing relationship with its northern neighbours as she addressed 350 people including government ministers, policymakers, business leaders and academics at the Arctic Circle Forum.

The event is designed to examine some of the shared challenges facing northern nations, including issues such as climate change and building sustainable and inclusive economies.

Ms Sturgeon said Scotland was the closest non-Arctic neighbour to the region, saying: “The north of Scotland is actually closer to the Arctic than it is to London.”

The Shetland Isles are 600 miles from London and 400 miles from the edge of the Arctic Circle.
