The San Diego Foundation and the Dr. Seuss Foundation are teaming up to offer $1 million in grants to nonprofits supporting young children in San Diego County, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
"Their support helps intensify the focus on preparing a child to read in their earliest years - a time when brain development and learning is critical to academic success and lifelong learning," Mark Stuart, president and CEO of the San Diego Foundation, says in a statement.
According to the Union-Tribune, 72% of economically disadvantaged third-graders in San Diego County don't meet language and literacy standards.
The grants, which will be awarded between $75,000 and $100,000 to nonprofits, will focus on children up to age 5.
