In November, more than 1,400 people from Central America and South America arrived in Denver, and that number is continuing to increase.

Since then, they've arrived in large numbers in other parts of the state as well.

"The volume of newly arriving asylum-seekers and asylum-seekers continues to increase a growing strain on the City's resources," says Mayor Michael Hancock.

In response, the Rose Community Foundation and Gov. Jared Polis have launched the Newcomers Fund, "to mobilize the foundation's philanthropic interest in supporting the incoming migrant population fleeing South and Central America," per a press release.

The immigrants are awaiting the outcome of immigration proceedings, meaning they can't work and aren't receiving traditional refugee resettlement benefits, per the Denver Post.

"Here in Colorado, we believe that people fleeing oppression and persecution should be able to safely and humanely find their way to freedom, and we are grateful for the work of Rose Community Foundation towards helping those in need," says Polis.
