Rapid City, South Dakota, has been chosen as one of five US cities to join the 2023 Peer Cities Network, an initiative from the NYU Furman Center's Housing Solutions Lab that aims to find solutions to the country's housing problems.

The Rapid City Journal reports that the city's goal is "to keep housing affordable for people who are already living where they want to live."

The other four cities selected are Cheyenne, Illinois; Jackson, Wyoming; Skokie, Tennessee; and Olympia, Washington.

Rapid City will be working on "the shortage of low income housing and what we can do to address the shortage of low income housing and prevent the displacement of low income residents just to keep housing affordable for people who are already living where they want to live," Laura Jones, the city's housing and community development manager, tells the Journal.

"It's a lot of knowledge and experience from all over the country that we'll be able to tap into that we may otherwise not have been able to," Jones adds.

The Peer Cities Network is open to cities with populations between 50,000 and 500,000.
