Sophia Bomar remembers watching the Rose Parade as a child.

"Before I even knew anything about Michigan football, I remember watching the Rose Parade on television and I have always loved it," the 19-year-old from Berrien County, Mich., tells MLive.

Bomar will march with the University of Michigan Marching Band in the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year's Day in Pasadena, Calif., as part of the Rodney Weir Marching Band Scholarship.

It's a scholarship inspired by Weir, who was drum major of the Michigan Marching Band in the 1992 Rose Bowl.

"It will be a day to appreciate beautiful music, make new friends, and learn about other cultures," Weir, an assistant professor at Western Michigan University, says in a press release from the Berrien Community Foundation, which started the scholarship last year.

Bomar, who plans to attend the University of Michigan in the fall on a full scholarship, will be the third recipient of the scholarship, which is open to all Berrien County students who participated in marching band in high school and intend to continue their band participation at the college level.
