When Pauline Town started Toshie's Cafe in Ashton-under-Lyne, Manchester, in 2013, she didn't have much in the way of formal training or work experience.

But that's about to change.

The cafe is run by Town, a self-described "social entrepreneur," and its mission is to provide affordable, nutritious food to those in need in the local community, the Guardian reports.

Toshie's Cafe is one of 10 Changemakers profiled in Big Issue's 2024 issue, which notes that food poverty is a problem in the UK and that food banks are struggling to keep up with rising food prices.

Among the Changemakers: Luminary Bakery, a social enterprise in London that uses baking to help women who've suffered from gender-based violence, sexual violence, exploitation, and trafficking get skills and jobs.

After their training is over, the women receive support from Big Issue Recruit, a specialist recruitment service helping people who face barriers into work.

The women work with some of the most disadvantaged women in London; they've experienced gender-based violence, sexual violence, exploitation, and trafficking.
