Chalkboard: Youth Philanthropy Council; Party in the Park and Prom Photo Request

Foundation: Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge

"We are very grateful anytime any organization, especially one as important as the Youth Philanthropy Council, takes the time to look at what we're doing."

That's how the executive director of the River City Bread Basket sums up the work of Virginia's Youth Philanthropy Council, a program through the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge that gives area high school students a chance to practice philanthropic leadership.

The council, made up of 22 students, meets regularly to learn about nonprofits and how they function and then, using the information they gather, create a grant application, review grants, and then distribute the money.

On Wednesday, the students presented the grants to the organizations.

The YPC works with the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge to create a grant application, review grants, and distribute the money.

"If any community organization is going to last it's going to need the recognition of youth because they're the next leaders," says the executive director of the River City Bread Basket.

One of the students on the YPC, Sydney Troxell, says the River City Bread Basket was one of the organizations that really stood out to her.

"I learned about a bunch of different perspectives and about a lot of issues in the community," she says.
