When Courtney Wynthein first started teaching at Eugene Field A+ Elementary School in Sioux Falls, SD, she didn't have much money for tap shoes.
But thanks to a grant from the Sioux Falls Public Schools Education Foundation, the physical education and dance teacher will now be able to buy them for more than 400 kindergarten through fifth-grade students, the Argus Leader reports.
"Teachers can use the tap shoes to enhance the curriculum and their lessons," Wynthein wrote in her application.
"For example, when students learn rhythm through tap, they are studying ratios, fractions, and proportions to improve math skills."
The foundation, which has given more than $1 million to 28 schools since 2008, also provided Wynthein with a $1,170 grant to buy the shoes.
The foundation's executive director announced Wednesday that it has passed the $1 million mark in funding.
The foundation also provided a catered meal for the entire staff at Eugene Field A+ on Friday.
