Schuh fund gave $184K to nonprofits

Family foundation’s fiscal 2014 recipients included private schools, Christian-based charities Schuh also gave significant donations to schools he and family members attended.

The Schuh Family Foundation, a private charity with a fair market value of $2.57 million, gave grants to more than 30 nonprofits for the fiscal year beginning in June 2013.

In fiscal 2012, Schuh’s charity was in the highest 20 percent of foundations in the county in terms of total donations, according to Urban Institute data, the most recent available.

The foundation gave other large grants in fiscal 2014: $31,000 to the private Severn School in Severna Park, which Schuh and his children attended, and $30,000 to Dartmouth College, the Ivy League school in New Hampshire where Schuh received his bachelor’s degree.

Bill Longbrake, an executive in residence at the University of Maryland’s business school, said wealthy individuals sometimes start foundations to make charitable giving a family exercise.
