GRASS LAKE, MI Farmers market vendors may soon have a place to take refuge from the beating sun and the pouring rain in Grass Lake.

The Grass Lake Community Wellness Initiative and Chelsea-Area Wellness Foundation have partnered to build a pavilion in the village events park on Brown Street.

“We’re just starting out with overall sponsorships,” said Diane DeBoe, founder of the Farmers Market and member of the Grass Lake Wellness Initiative. We got $10,000 from the Grass Lake Village Downtown Development Authority.”

Matt Pegouskie, community investment manager for the Chelsea-Area Wellness Foundation, said the hope is that the pavilion will increase vendors participating in farmers market.

“The pavilion will be used for other community events as well, like Music in the Park, the Traffic Jam’In, Heritage Day 5k and the Grass Lake Winter Jam’In,” Pegouskie said.

Michigan State University students designed the 80-by-40-foot pavilion with a driveway behind it, DeBoe said. Selling things like water and nachos, DeBoe said every little bit counts.

It’s important to recognize the local farmers, DeBoe said, because Grass Lake is an agricultural-centered community.
