Grant aims to help more Latino students get into college

RACINE COUNTY a Officials hope to boost education in Latino communities with the help of a new grant program.

The Racine County Board this month unanimously approved a $5,300 University of Wisconsin-Extension grant focusing on post-secondary education in Latino immigrant communities.

Yet Latino students in the Burlington and Racine Unified school districts enter higher education at a lower rate than white students, the resolution states.

The Extension office will partner with community organizations, including the Racine County Workforce Development Center.

aIt works to unite community partners so that (families) can get knowledge, skills and resources about higher education opportunities,a Hawks said.

The county hopes to reach about 30 to 40 families, Hawks said.
