Winter Haven to seek grant for historic Woman’s Club building rehab

Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution Monday to apply for a $100,000 grant from the Florida Division of Historical Resources that the city would have to match to pay for improvements of the building at 660 Pope Ave. “We as a city would have to use taxpayer money to rehab the whole building.”

Chichetto asked why the city doesn’t donate the building to the Woman’s Club, but the Woman’s Club donated the building to the city in 1998.

The building was built in 1923 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

Bob Gernert, founder of the museum and a columnist for The Ledger, said the Woman’s Club building is the only Winter Haven museum on the registry. WINTER HAVEN The Woman’s Club building in Winter Haven may get some TLC.

The building needs a new climate control system, not only to cool and heat the building, but also to preserve artifacts in the museum; insulation; porch restoration; window replacement; roof repairs and weather proofing of doors, staff said.

Parks and Recreation Director Travis Edwards told commissioners Monday’s resolution was not an agreement to pay the $100,000 match.
