Youth program works to help teens learn about themselves

Throughout the year, the Tri-County Youth Services Bureau offers anger management sessions and other programs that help teenagers learn ways to manage their emotions, develop social skills and prepare them for adulthood.

Founded in 1971, the bureau is a community-based, non-residential, delinquency prevention organization that serves the youth and their families, said Laurel James, executive director of the bureau.

aOur goal is to prevent kids from entering the juvenile system,a James said.

When the bureau was first established, it offered services to about 100 people in Southern Maryland.

Jones said one of the benefits of the group is that many kids walk away with a feeling of being accepted and that they are not alone in feeling the emotions they feel.

aThey have people to talk to, and they can guide each other,a she said.

Other than the anger management sessions, the nonprofit also offers other programs, including Ready 4 Life that prepares teenagers for adulthood and Youth Leadership Development that helps them develop leadership skills.
