Local artist Nicole Holderbaum wants to pass on the joy of creativity with her Jax Kid’s Mural Festival and Mural for Jax Youth initiative. It doesn’t have to be judged by anyone else to be recognized as beautiful.”

The One Spark turned Spark Grant project Jax Kid’s Mural Festival is bringing artists together both locally and across the state to design six murals and help children color them in with paint. She’s still looking for companies and organizations to serve as sponsors.

Branching out of Jax Kid’s Mural Festival and the driving force for Holderbaum is Murals for Jax Youth. Partnering with public schools in Jacksonville, she will bring a spray painted mural design to a school each month for students to paint and display in the school. Holderbaum plans to work with schools in underprivileged areas first, with the overall goal to have a painted mural in every Jacksonville public school.

Her first Murals for Jax Youth project will be with the Young Men’s Leadership Academy at Eugene Butler Middle School.

“Some kids have never even held a paintbrush. For Murals for Jax Youth, Holderbaum is also applying for other grants and has a Go Fund Me account to raise enough money for a mural project for each school.

The University chose Pi Kappa Phi out of several fraternities because of its values. Pi Kappa Phi is the only fraternity that owns and operates its own philanthropy, The Ability Experience, which helps people with disabilities. In the Fall 2015 semester, members of Pi Kappa Phi launched the “Spread the Word to End the Word Campaign.”

Jacksonville City Council, school board and hospital board consider partnering for possible grant money – The Jacksonville News: The Jacksonville News Jacksonville City Council, school board and hospital board consider partnering for possible grant money

JACKSONVILLE a The Board of Education, City Council and Jacksonville Regional Medical Center board are considering a partnership to contract with a firm that would seek grant money for the three entities.

Under the current consideration, the school board, City Council and RMC board would each pay $7,600 for a 12-month pledge from the firm to seek out grant opportunities and write proposals for the three.

aItas just another alternative to try to find some more funding,a Jacksonville City Schools Superintendent Mark Petersen said in an interview.

aAnything thatas gonna benefit the hospital is gonna benefit the city, and anything thatas gonna benefit the schools is gonna benefit the city,a Simmons said.

Taylor said Azimuth Grant Strategies currently serves seven clients that she considered along-term.a She said clients have most commonly been school systems and that partnerships like the one being considered in Jacksonville have been served before.

Asked how the firm would ensure a balance of work devoted to the schools, hospital and city, Taylor said some of the responsibility would fall back on the three.

But most board members see the deal as worthwhile, considering the potential for money far exceeding the $7,600 they would commit; Taylor said her firm within 18 months has secured over $640,000 in grant money for Demopolis City Schools.

Given that the system doesnat have staff solely dedicated to seeking grants, board President David Glass alluded to the chance of the schools missing out on money.

Plainville Senior Center Seeks Grant To Hire Staff

February 16, 2016 7:37 pm Published by

PLAINVILLE The membership of the town senior center has doubled in the past five years, and the center is now seeking a grant to hire a part-time receptionist.

The center applied this month to the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain for a grant to hire an $16 an hour office assistant to work 19 hours a week at the center’s front desk, answering questions, signing up new members, accepting program applications and talking with callers and walk-ins, director Shawn Cohen said Tuesday.

Since its founding 40 years ago, the center has relied heavily on volunteers, who in 2015 donated more than 16,000 hours to the center, Cohen said in her report.

“We have so many really committed people helping to make the center the exciting place it is,” she said.

But over the years, a decline in volunteerism has made it tougher to find people willing to commit to a set schedule to run the front desk, a duty that includes creating and keeping financial records.

“Our ‘Achilles Heel’ is finding competent volunteers to provide accurate financial record keeping, money handling, attention to detail, careful and correct documentation and a precise review of work done prior to reconciliation,” she said.

The center unsuccessfully tried to recruit and train volunteers to handle the financial task of trip and program registration. So “we now pair one volunteer with a senior center staffer who oversees accuracy,” she said in the report.

The grant the center seeks would cover the $15,808 cost of the new office assistant for one year.
