Mark Hammer seeking at-large City Council seat
Friday, May 1, 2015

After nearly 20 years as Second Ward Councilman, Mark Hammer, 57, is seeking an at-large seat on the Republican ticket in the May 5 primary.

“When I joined the City Council in September 1995, the city was just breaking ground on the ‘new’ water treatment plant, welcoming Crown Industries as the newest industrial member of our community and committing $325,000 of IBM funds to an Endowment Fund at the Putnam County Community Foundation,” Hammer recalled.

Hammer has served as treasurer of Putnam County Playhouse; past member and president of the Greencastle Park Board and is a member of Greencastle Christian Church and the Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce.

CDT(Danielle Guerra dguerra@shawmedia.com)A sign for Give Local DeKalb County hangs on the fence Thursday along First Street in DeKalb in front of the Ellwood House and Museum, one of the 62 participating nonprofits that hope to benefit from the countywide online fundraiser coming up Tuesday.

DeKALB More than 40 local nonprofits are hoping that giving money goes viral Tuesday.

The organizations have been promoting Give Local DeKalb County, an online donation drive designed to support local agencies, using social media. “This community is so generous.”

She said she doesn’t think the Give Local campaign will detract from ongoing fundraising efforts to help those affected by the Fairdale tornado, and many of the organizations participating in the event will likely be of service to Fairdale residents as part of the boarder long-term recovery process.

The cooperative spirit of the campaign “says a whole lot about this community,” Zurbrugg said.

Baylor philanthropy class to give nonprofit groups $75000 during reception

For the second semester in a row, Baylor’s Philanthropy and the Public Good class distributed thousands of dollars in grant money to nonprofits. Andy Hogue, lecturer in political science and director of Civic Education and Community Service Program, teaches the philanthropy course.

Hogue said this semester positions available in the class were reduced from 30 to 21 students and created an additional one-hour course for eight students who took the class in the fall.

“We had some funding set aside for a group of last semester’s students doing advanced study with me this spring in a course called Philanthropy Senior Fellows,” Hogue said. “The role of those eight students was to serve as mentors for those taking the class the first time around.”

Prairie Village, Kan., junior Jack Steadman took the class in the fall semester and was selected to be one of the students to take Philanthropy Senior Fellows for the spring. “We reorganized our sub-sectors and also created a clearer evaluation process of our students as they tried to distinguish between many deserving nonprofit organizations.”

In the bigger class, the 21 students were divided into five groups that evaluated six different subsectors. Steadman said the lab hour was an improvement to the way the class flowed as it allowed the group to have a time set for board meetings.

Liberty Township, Ohio, junior Drew Hamilton was one of the 21 students taking the class for the first time.

Palmetto Conservation Foundation Among 52 Recipients To Share $1.2 Million In Grants …

April 30, 2015 5:00 pm Published by

COLUMBIA, S.C., May 1, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — The Palmetto Conservation Foundation is one of 52 organizations in eight states to share $1.2 million in support of environmental stewardship initiatives, thanks to Dominion Resources’ competitive program designed to support specific, short-term projects that improve the environment.

The $25,000 grant awarded to the Palmetto Conservation Foundation will support the construction of a new, 50-foot fiberglass pedestrian bridge on the Enoree Passage of the Palmetto Trail in Newberry County, S.C. The new bridge is needed after the previous bridge was washed out in a storm.

The program has been expanded since it was piloted in Virginia in 2013.

“Expanding the program to include additional communities this year was an exciting prospect,” said Pamela Faggert, chief environmental officer for Dominion.

Since 2003, the Dominion Foundation has given more than $20 million in support of environmental initiatives. CGT owns and operates nearly 1,500 miles of FERC-regulated interstate natural gas pipeline in South Carolina and southeastern Georgia.

Dominion (NYSE: D), headquartered in Richmond, Va., is one of the nation’s largest producers and transporters of energy.
