Center Line nets grant for kids activities at festival | C & G Newspapers

CENTER LINE A $9,780 grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs will mean more children’s activities and entertainment at the 2017 Center Line Independence Festival, officials said late last month.

Center Line’s grant request, one of 559 applications that reportedly competed for MCACA funding during the 2016 fiscal year, was awarded following a peer-review process conducted by a panel of arts and culture experts from Michigan and other states. The festivities included an evening of fireworks at Memorial Park and were reminiscent of a prior three-day festival supported by the city’s business association for a few years in the 1990s.

The Independence Festival, like the annual fireworks event, was supported by private donations.

According to a press release from the city, organizations receiving MCACA grants are required to match that with other public and private funds.

“The Center Line community is thrilled to be able to offer the public in general an opportunity to enjoy awesome cultural activities during our community’s biggest annual event,” Center Line Mayor Robert Binson said in a statement.

Clyde Gateway will hold two public consultation events later this month to gather opinions on plans to deliver redevelopment schemes in the east end of the city and in Rutherglen.

Up to 75 new flats are in the pipeline for Dundee as disused buildings are being converted in a regeneration drive spurred by the waterfront development.

City architects Jon Frullani have reported a flurry of investment, and two planning applications for apartments have been lodged with the council this month.

Feasibility studies are also being carried out on around half a dozen “well-known buildings” with a view to redeveloping them.

Earlier this month, Jon Frullani sought permission on behalf of AKG Property Group to transform Club Romano, a former Italian community hub, into student apartments.

The building on West Wynd has been vacant since the club closed in June and it is hoped that it could be used to construct three two-bedroom flats.

The site lies close to Dundee University and the application notes that the apartments are likely to be popular with students.

Meanwhile, an application has been submitted for plans to convert a former chapel on Candle Lane, just a few minutes away from the waterfront, into two flats.

$20k grant helps fulfill Glendale High’s musical wish list

October 12, 2016 5:00 am Published by

Some Glendale High students will no longer have to share musical instruments and older instruments will be retired after the school received a more than $20,000 financial boost from the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation.

Tricia Steel, a representative from the Los Angeles-based foundation, recently notified Glendale school officials that the high school had won a competitive grant, and it will receive $24,000 worth of new instruments.

The grant will help Rangel fulfill her wish list of 10 new instruments a piccolo, two double French horns, a baritone saxophone, a euphonium, two tenor saxophones, a string bass, a trombone and an alto saxophone.

Rangel said later that the roughly 250 students involved in the instrumental program at Glendale High make up five large ensembles.

The annual budget to run the program is roughly $50,000, supported largely by donations and sponsors.

“Money is always tight, and our department is always looking for local business sponsors, individual donations and new ideas for fundraising,” Rangel said.

Sometimes the costs for supplies and instrument repairs can climb to $10,000 per year.

However, the payoff is well worth the effort, Rangel added.

“Being a part of a music department ‘family’ can change a kid’s life,” she said.
