Community Foundation helps residents give back to region

July 3, 2016 9:41 pm Published by

The local foundation now spans 5 counties in East Mississippi, working to ensure an increasing quality of life by helping people give back in the region they call home.

“It allows anybody in the community to be a philanthropist and to shape or sustain something that they feel very passionately about,” explained Becky Glover, Executive Director of the Community Foundation of East Mississippi.

There are currently seven community foundations in the state of Mississippi and every one of them is funded by various local people and groups.

“Not only is the Community Foundation unique because anyone can start a fund,” said Glover, “All of our funds are considered open funds which means anyone can donate any amount to them at any time.”

With the smallest donation being around five hundred dollars and the Community Foundation will take that money and invest, manage, and use it in the intended way brought forth by the donor.

The community foundation currently has 45 different funds right now with a majority being endowments and anyone can donate to the funds or set up a new fund for something they feel passionately about.

As foundation leaders explain, through every dollar given to the Community Foundation, it can help make a difference in the lives of those in East Mississippi.

Stargazing In the Ohio Valley, Wheeling Getting Bigger

July 3, 2016 8:56 pm Published by

Soon, area residents will be able to add stargazing to the list of recreational activities they can enjoy at Moundsville’s Grand Vue Park.

Wheeling business owners Robert and Libby Strong have plans in the works to place a public telescope, and eventually an observatory, at the park.

“When you look up at the night time sky that we have here in West Virginia, if you truly understand what you’re looking at, you don’t feel that you’re a tiny insignificant part, you feel that you’re a part of something greater than you,” Robert Strong, a member of the Near Earth Object Foundation, said.

The 16-inch telescope, which weighs several hundred pounds, will have four times the light-gathering power and two times better resolution than the 8-inch telescopes they currently use.

“To look through a 16-inch telescope, you’re going to see fainter galaxies, more stars and star clusters, colors in nebulas and gas and dust clouds, and the planets are going to be bigger and brighter and clearer,” Strong said. “The concept of having a 16-inch telescope that’s going to be a public access telescope is really exciting.”

Additionally, the $3,700 Orion telescope will be available for research purposes including following up on asteroid, comet and supernova finds that experts need a large telescope to see. This particular telescope also has a digital database of over 43,000 objects that it can track through the sky and does not need to be adjusted to account for the rotation of the Earth like other telescopes.

The new telescope will eventually be a permanent fixture in Grand Vue Park, although the exact location and other details are still undecided. Strong received a grant from the Chevron Community Foundation for the telescope, and now he just needs the funds to house and maintain it as well as to hook up a power source.

According to Strong, Grand Vue Park is an ideal location not just for the high altitude, but because “they’re doing a lot of innovative things there. It’s attracting people not just local people, but from long distances,” he said.

Additionally, Grand Vue is in the process of becoming a “dark park.” This means not having any extra lighting at night and using specific types of lights that are aimed at the correct angles in order to put off only what light is necessary for safety.

“We’re hoping that the dark sky venue that Grand Vue Park is going to be having is going to leak out to Moundsville itself, and if the observatory becomes another one of those attractions that makes Moundsville an interesting place to come spend more than just the afternoon or the day, that would be awesome,” Strong said.

The telescope at Grand Vue will be building upon other starwatch activities the Strongs currently hold on weekends.

Applications For Venue Soundproofing Grants To Shush Whiny Neighbours Are Open Now

July 3, 2016 8:56 pm Published by

You might remember a few months back when the Victorian state government announced the ‘Good Music Neighbours’ program a an initiative designed to help live music venues better control sound emissions and maintain strong relationships with neighbouring businesses and residences.

Venues can apply for up to $25,000 in funding, which goes towards engaging with a sound proofing service, the installation of acoustic insulations in walls, ceilings and floors, installing acoustic glazing, sound absorbing materials and air-lock doors, as well as capital investment in sound equipment and room design to reduce sound emissions.

Grant to help more ride horses

July 3, 2016 8:56 pm Published by

“It’s like his real happy place.”

Blake is among the 100 area youngsters and adults with special needs who benefit from the horse riding program offered at the Mane & Taill Therapeutic Horsemanship Academy in Poplar Branch.

Samantha Iull, a special education teacher at First Flight High School in Dare County, started Mane & Taill in 2009 and the group became a nonprofit in 2010.

Roughly half of the horsemanship academy’s students live in either Dare or Currituck counties. She said the grant, which was awarded in May, will help families of academy students who live in Dare and Currituck counties afford the school’s tuition costs through 2017.

Iull said many students develop confidence learning to ride horses, and it shows them they can accomplish things despite their disability.

Iull says she got the idea for the horsemanship academy when she took her students to see some horses and thought it would be a great idea to develop a program to teach them how to ride.

“I saw how students could benefit being around horses,” she said.

Patricia Rippin, one of Iull’s co-workers in the Dare County Schools, said she always appreciated her friend’s passion for helping people with special needs.

Rippin’s daughter, Abigail, participates in horse shows, so she thought bringing her experiences to the academy could be of some benefit. She said Bubby enjoys riding horses and the academy gives him a chance to feel part of a community.

Barkley is also a member of the Monarch Beach Club of Manteo, an organization that serves people with special needs.

Mary Liberman, also a member of the Monarch Beach Club, said she brings center members who want to learn to ride a horse to Mann & Taill.

Liberman said she remembers when Iull started the academy with only a few people.
